i haven't had a perm since 4th grade. and it was a curly perm then.
i'm most worried about damaging my hair, and it being dry and brittle...my hair was natural and i put box-dye in it november 2009. that was the last time. so my hair isn't over processed or anything.
where would you go to do it? i don't ever spend money on my hair...should i spend money on a good place to do it? would something like GJ salon-school mess it up?
Because those chemicals are not anything to mess around with. You can easily burn your skin. And the OTC stuff that's available to people without a beauty license is crap. That will do more harm than good. And if you don't do it right you can end up with a frizzy mess that you're going to have to cut off.
I haven't tried it, but what about those keratin straightening treatments? I think they can smooth and straighten hair. Not as permanant but definitely less damaging.

yeah, I've heard of various shampoo-type products that work really well. I think there were some girls on the S&B board who used them - some were actually sad because it worked a little too well (I think they were hoping it would just help their hair look straight on some days, but that they could still wear it curly on other days and it made their hair straight for a lot longer). I would go ask on that board!
No, I don't have a regular stylist, and yes, I want it to look like I straightened my hair everyday. My hair is pretty wavy without straightening it. I also have very very thick hair, so it takes about an hour each time to get a good straight to it.
I'm going to be blunt and say that if you want it to look that way just shell out the money and get it done. Who cares what the rest of us think about getting it done. Just please don't attempt it yourself.
WTF is a straight perm? Are you talking about a relaxing treatment like the keratin process?
If so, I totally recommend the Keratin treatment. I go to Ulta and it's decent priced ($159-179) and they do a really good job. I would love to go to GJ to the girl who does my highlights but I can't see paying $300 for something I can get done for $159.

It's basically using the chemicals from a regular perm to straighten the hair. Or at least that is what googling it made me believe it is.
Yes amanda! I'm ignoring you!! Haha, sorry, I'm doing this via blackberry in my meeting right now!! I've used a straightening shampoo before (herbal essence) and it did not even come close to doing anything to my hair. I am not worried about wanting to curl my hair bc I never curl my hair...ever. I've curled it probably 10xs in my life.
Sc, I don't know where you got the idea of me doing it on my own, that was not in the plans.
What is keratin treatment ( I suppose I could google this ). I'm not tooooo worried about the cost. Cheapest healthy/safe way possible, but I rough-budgeted-in-my-head for $200.

right - that's what I was thinking, I was just trying to say that some girls apparently found something that worked really well might be worth asking on that board for suggestions in case you want to try something like that again.
i want a curly perm.. remember when you beezies nixed that a while ago??
FWIW I had a friend who just got one and it turned out really cute! I personally don't think all perms are bad. You do want to make sure your hair is long enough so that you can get it trimmed after and follow all the directions.

If Jenn isn't going to go ask about this magic shampoo I might have to go ask them for her.
Keratin is not that bad for your hair. Be careful of anything called brazillian blow out...they use formaldehyde. I go to Ulta and it's $159. I have pretty thick wavy hair and it's amazing on my hair. It lasts for close to 3 months. Cuts WAAAY down on the blow drying. What used to take an hour + to blow dry and straighten my hair now takes about 15 minutes.
You do have to use sulfate free shampoo after you get it done. I prefer the sulfate free shampoo, I think it leaves my hair healthier. The process itself is a little time consuming. Plan on being there about 3-3.5 hours.
Basically what they do is - Wash your hair Blow dry Put the stuff in Blow dry your hair on cold Flat iron your hair You sit and wait Then they wash your hair Blow dry again
so...i'm a really bad asian. where are there good asian salons? is there something i can yelp?
The woman that runs my salon is Asian, and so is everyone that works there. Does that count? I am far away though, they did a body wave for me that was awesome though.

And you're done
I may have to ask DH if we can swing me doing this. I'd love to have my hair look good without having to do too much to it in the morning. I'm also trying to grow it out again (thank you post-baby fall out!), so this might be a good way to get things started. And $159 isn't that bad for 3 months of good hair days!
