Stan, I don't know, either I am defensive because I am this way or this board is getting too uptight.
So what that you are thinking about your possible future kid's name? I did it too, we even have our next dog named and he or she isn't arriving for a year or two (we are planning on Foster, very gender neutral).
Before I even met DH, my sister and I agreed that she could have my grandma's name, we both loved it, Clara Adele.
True to form, I had a girl so did she, good thing I let her keep the name, we have a Julia Kathleen and she has a Clara Adele.
After DH and I were dating a few months, I told him I wanted to use his middle name as a first name for a boy, Maguire, well, guess what, we have a Maguire. And his middle name is my grandpa's middle name, so both last names as first and middle names and we knew that years ago.
So unless I am completely out in left field for this board, I don't see why it's a big deal. We are done with two kids but I even planned what I'd name a surprise baby (Charlotte or James).
And that's even a plan knowing that DH's vasectomy came back all clear.
Parents who give their kids weirdass names just like having people ask them why they chose that name, so that they have a story to tell.
Yup.
I hate all of the names discussed in this thread, but I agree with the whole "it's your kid, no one will ever care as much as you do" thing. So, whatever.
I just knew it would increase the "Stan is ridiculous" commentary.
The most ridiculous part of this thread is that you have an inability to express yourself clearly and concisely.
Look. Here's how to do it.
I want to name my kids X and Y. My husband disagrees. [insert whatever else]
But, really, who cares what anybody names their babies?
Maybe MM Moms.
Yeah, I don't care either, as an MMM
OP, really don't worry about this right now. Maybe another liberal lion will die between now and when you TTC, you and DH will both love THAT name, and this will be such a non-issue that you'll laugh about it when someone unearths this polished turd.
And FWIW, DD's MN is Miles. It's DH's grandma's maiden name, it's a nice one-syllable MN, and it works for us. I don't give a shit who thinks it's great or awful. We love it, and DH's grandma was thrilled.
I don't understand why people are saying it's inappropriate to be discussing names before you're pregnant. It's all in fun and of course you can change your mind later. That said, if your likes remain the same, I VASTLY prefer Truman to McGovern. I vote for a pet named McGovern (Gov would be a fun nickname) and kids named Truman and Mara.
And I am over the comparison to a porn star. Some time, when you're not on a monitored computer and not around the baby, google MH's name. But don't image google,
OMG! You weren't kidding. Um...wow.
I like Mattis for a first name.
ETA: did that freak you out when you first met him and googled him?
Go stand at your back door and call McGovern to come for dinner. Really yell it like the kid wasn't listening and you want them to come now. How stupid does it sound to you?
Would you really want that to be YOUR first name? Think about that as a professional name, what kind of nicknames will kids make out of it? What kind of grief do you anticipate your kid having to put up with from other kids? How many people, when he's an adult, will have any understanding of why that's his name other than - man, your folks were really weird - did they just not like you?
Clarifying: not saying NOT to name your kid this, just throwing things out as food for thought.
Parents who give their kids weirdass names just like having people ask them why they chose that name, so that they have a story to tell.
Well, in a way that is kind of true in this case. I think Senator McGovern was an amazing person in that he put his convictions ahead of personal and political success. I would like it if people got to hear about him in the future, even though most people have no idea who he was.
Most people have no idea who George McGovern was? Seriously? That is depressing. But still no reason to saddle your kid with that name.
