I have already named a cat Adlai. And another cat Eleanor Roosevelt. I am not drunk. I think this thread was fun. Now the Giants are on. Mara, after Wellington Mara, is my backup girl name.
So your girl and the cat will share the same name? :-|
Last name as a first name? I don't know about that. H has a boys first name as his last name and his first name which is common could also be a last name. People get his names mixed up all the time...even when it's spelled out "First name: X, Last Name: Y. Last name as a first name would just suck.
I don't see anything wrong with Adlai...not that I would ever name any kids that. McGovern is definitely going to get the kid made of fun (he won't be a baby forever) and I've always thought Truman was a stupid name. I'm all for different names but you've got to draw the line somewhere.
I'll admit, I'm pretty surprised by the Adlai hate. It's a real name, historical, etc. I mean, yeah, I get and expected the distaste for McG as a first name. But Adlai is similar to a lot of other names (Adalia, Adelaide, Adele, etc.), but with the added bonus of being super America loving! But not as in your face as say, Truman. No one has ever criticized it IRL, and H really does love it. Is it because it's a boy's name? I really feel like it's more feminine that a lot of boy names currently used as girl names.
She's probably going to spend her life having this conversation - "Adele? No, Adlai."
The name Julius fits a lot of the same criteria you've listed above - it's similar to female names like Julie and Julia, it's more feminine than some men's names that are used for girls, e.g. Parker. It's a real, historical name, and it has one main association, to a well-known male. Yet if someone wanted to use it for a girl's name, would you really be surprised to hear that people don't like it?
Lol. I kept my LN. Our kids will have both our surnames in their names. H loves Adlai. Neither took compromise. Neither did Truman. Compromise implies concessions. McGovern is the only place concessions are necessary. H is Southern. He's used to different names.
Disagree. Your H making this concession isn't necessary. If he doesn't like it, he doesn't like it.
