Husband's car was hit by a tree -- damaged but likely totaled.
No power or water for 4-7 days it looks like. Including no elevator, which means we have 17 flights of pitch black stairs to deal with when we leave the apartment.
No word on when subways will e back.
Cell and data are jammed up in manhattan. I only have service because I walked to a friend's apartment in Brooklyn to recharge/shower/call the insurance company.
And our families have no power and mine have downed trees, but that's what happens with any large storm for them.
I assume you are going to leave the city and camp out at a hotel until you have power? Good luck- there is only oen tunnel open, right? Are the bridges back open?
We can't get out of the city anyway with no car! And we don't want to move the cats and I'm supposed to go to work tomorrow (guess I'll take car service?) which may be a good thing.
So I think the plan will be to go to work, hope the gyms near there will let me buy day passes to shower, and get takeout each night before heading home for the evening.
Most of NJ is a mess. Lots and lots of power outages, trees down, flooding. We have boats that flew over fences down the shore and rail cars that blew onto th NJ turnpike.
I have a friend in Mt. Laurel, NJ that I haven't seen anything on FB from yet. Anyone know how that area fared?
I'm about 15 minutes from there and fine. The usual culprit for flooding, the Rancocas Creek, wasn't expected to rise too much. From checking the outage maps, your friend is likely without power, though ours has been on since before 1PM.

On the plus side (if there is a plus side), you are going to have some awesomely in shape legs after climbing 17 flights of stairs.
Parents are on the barrier island north of Atlantic City. The barrier island community is devastated. They took water up to their second floor but are other wise whole and ok. Whole homes are gone. Huge fishing vessels are sitting in the middle of roads, houses lifted off foundations and floated into the bayside. Its so completely and totally surreal.
My MIL lives there too. She will go back on Wednesday to see what happened. I am nervous as she is on the north end near the beach and the bay where the flooding was tremendous.
Did your parents evacuate? I will keep them in my prayers.

Hahaha... That *is* plus side. Also, I will say that I walked up the Rocky Stairs in Philly on Friday and it was NBD but ours are awful.
My office is very prominent on the skyline and definitely has power, so I'll waste my hours there tomorrow with Internet and phones and stuff, and then will come back to Amish country at night. But with rations from civilization!
Financial district, Manhattan checking in. We were hit hard with flooding. There was water that covered cars in front of our building and we are 3 blocks in from the East River. We have been without hot water since Sunday afternoon and without power since about 7PM Monday. There are not even emergency lights in the hallways or staircases and it is really creepy.
The whole of Manhattan below 31st is blacked out because of an explosion at a power generator at 14th street. There is severe flooding in subway stations in lower Manhattan and because it is salt water there is a lot of damage. The news is estimating about four days for both power and subway service to be restored, but I think it will take longer. Our building is estimating 10 days for our electricity to be restored.
What really sucks for me is that my job is closed due to lack of power and I have a you don't work, you don't get paid kind of job. I have already missed two days of work and from the sounds of it, it will be at least four more days. I was already stressed about money before this happened and now I am completely stressed out. We have also had to spend more than usual on taxis and eating out. DH also can't work b/c his office is flooded and he is paid mostly in commission. Boo for us.
I feel bad feeling so bad because there are people that lost their homes and their lives and we are fine, but I'm scared if things don't get back to normal soon.

Doing great here. We never lost power, and in the neighborhood there are just leaves and small branches down, no trees. The Derecho was much worse here in terms of damage.

Thanks! He sent me a message last night and they got through with minimal damage.
