Hi! Honestly, Hinesville's schools suck. They are some of the worst schools in the area. If I were you, I'd look into housing in the Richmond Hill area. It's a great area to live in. Schools are wonderful. There are always community events around. It would be a 15-20 min commute to Ft Stewart, but it's worth it. It's a far better area. Also, aviation and a few others get orders to FS but are moved to Hunter Army Airfield after processing. It's something you may want to check into. It would suck to find a house close to FS only to be moved over to HAAF. I've seen it happen a few times. Let me know if you have any questions about the area.
Thank you! I've heard Hinesville schools aren't good, but I wanted to know from someone who's there. We would definitely be on Ft Stewart and not HAAF. My husband doesn't fly anymore. He'd be working at the hospital. We don't have to go there. It's just an option. But there are a lot of options and I'd like to be able to rule some out, and shitty school systems are one thing I want to stay away from as much as possible. Although, I forgot about Richmond Hill. Someone recommended that area to us a while ago when we thought we'd end up at Stewart. If their schools are good, maybe we'll keep it on the list. Thanks for the info!

Richmond Hill is a great community. Overall, Ft Stewart is a great base. Hinesville just isn't a great area. I wouldn't rule FS out just because of Hinesville, though. There are so many great things about the greater Savannah area.
ok, it sounds like I should bump it up to the top of my list. We have 12 places to choose from and hopefully when DH and I compare lists, we'll match a few

Other than OCONUS or Hawaii(which you've been to, lol) Stewart would definitely top my list. They've built a lot of new buildings on post and expanded quite a bit. Savannah is gorgeous and has so much to do. Plus there's so much history, you can always take little field trips with DS. The food is incredible. Tybee Island is close and a ton of fun with outstanding food as well. You're not far from Charleston, SC or Florida. You can always trip up to Atlanta if you want some big city time. And the locals are amazing, very southern traditional, will welcome you into their home people. DH and I have seriously considered retiring in Savannah. I was born there, we spent some time there while AD, got married there, love it.

I would seriously do back flips and jump up and down squeeling like a 10 year old girl meeting Justin Beiber if either you or Stan moved back here.

If they ever open a NG MTC down there we would jump on it. Not sure if I'd want to work the AD one they have now.
I didn't realize Ft Stewart was so far from Richmond Hill. When I did mapquest to Winn ACH it was 48 minutes. Do many people who work on Ft Stewart commute from Richmond Hill? My husband says he's willing to do it, but he also thought it was only about 30 minutes.

The Maj I worked for lived in Richmond hill and commuted. He said it was well worth it because it's a nice drive and the neighborhoods are much better.
Thanks. The elementary school in RH looks great. We both agree that if he asks for Stewart, there's no way in hell we could live in Hinesville. And I would probably be looking for a job in Savannah so RH seems like the logical choice. I just worry about him committing to that commute every day for 2-3 years. This is so frustrating! He needs to make his request tomorrow and he's in such a small field now that he pretty much gets what he asks for. I'm kind of missing the days when the Army just told you where you're going
He lived in Hinesville... hated it. Lived in Ludowici, which is super small town, very quiet. Loved it.
We lived on Hilton Head Island, which was about 1.5 hrs to Fort Stewart.
And we lived in a little town that was about 45 minutes away.
The last two that we lived in, obviously he hated HHI the most, but the 45 minutes was doable. They moved his building so that coming in a back gate was easier, then driving across post to get to work. He had soldiers that lived in Hinesville but left earlier then he did because of the traffic to get across post.

The commute to FS from RH is 45 min if you go to the main gate. It's only 20 min if you go in the back gate. That gate is also closer to Wynn. It's not a bad drive at all.
