We had a lot of similar criteria--primarily that we wanted something around $25K that would be client-appropriate, versatile, and fun to drive. We ended up with a Volkswagen Tiguan. It's all leather, full sunroof, small SUV and I think we paid $26K for it new. It does take premium gas though, so be forewarned.
I'm looking for something similar right now. My tops are: Lexus RX, Toyota Highlander, Honda CRV, Camry, and the Prius.
The RX and Highlander run very similar in price, and I believe the RX gets better gas mileage (although it may take premium). I also really like the CRV, but my husband thinks it looks too girly. I love the Lexus ES sedan, but the Camry is basically the same car at a much cheaper price, and can be just as nice. What I really want is the Prius though. It is surprisingly roomy. It also feels like you're driving around in a zippy little spaceship, which I love. My husband doesn't think it's cool enough, but I'm working on convinving him.
