I found a good deal on living social for half off- just wasn't sure if it was worth it. My hair gets frizzy all the time, and is very uncontrollable if I don't do it daily.

I have had it done twice and it was completely worth it! I have super thick hair and the treatment made it so smooth & manageable. I don't know if I would pay full price, but I'm always on the lookout for deals.

I have had several and by far prefer Brazilian Blowout to keratin (I have had Coppola and one other brand). They are very similar, except the keratin requires you to keep your hair dry for three days following treatment. I also found Brazilian Blowout to last longer than keratin.
I have been having treatments, either BB or keratin for almost two years now, I love what it has done for my hair - really it has been life changing. I used to spend forever drying and flat ironing my hair with mediocre results (easily frizzed, even with good product), now I can walk out of the house with wet hair and it will dry straight and frizz free. My blow dry time is dramatically reduced and I have not touched my straight iron in about two years.
If you are on the fence about getting it, I say go for it. I have purchased several living social or groupon deals, then once I found a great salon, I asked if they will give me the same price without going through groupon, they agreed. I pay $125, which is about average for my area, although most salons list price at $200-300, I have never paid that much.

My coworker did it and it broke off all the hair on the top of her head. They told her it was because she also colored her hair and because her hair was dry. She looked like Pat Benatar for a while and then paid to get hair extensions.

It was totally worth it to me. My hair is pretty thick and tightly curled at the roots. It cut my blowdry time in 1/2 and afterwards I only had to touch up my bangs and a few ends with the flatiron. Normally I'd have to spend another 15min after blowdrying going through all my hair with a flatiron. Also, the time I spent blowdrying was purely just to dry my hair, not to coax it straight.
I could also just let it airdry and it would be fine.
It also held curls from a curling iron much better than my hair does when non-treated.
And all of the abovementioned styles withstood 90 degree heat & lots of humidity.

OMG no way!! I must get this!!
Seriously, you must!
The first time I had it done, the girl in the chair next to me mentioned she did not think I needed it b/c my hair looked pretty straight, but this was after styling wit a straightening iron. My hairstylist explained it best by saying that look is what I am going for, but without all the work. She was so right. I don't look different, it just takes so much less effort now.
All my life I was jealous of people with great hair and wondered how long they spend styling it - I felt like I just did not put in enough effort or lacked skill. Now I have great hear and little effort - seriously it has been life changing.

I'm thinking your friend probably had the japanese or thermal straightening treatment, not the keratin treatment. Keratin is actually fine for color treated hair. It's actually supposed to make color treated or damaged hair healthier because it adds a layer of keratin on to each strand.
OP- I've had it done and it is awesome. I also used a groupon. I have to wait another year to have it done since it isn't recommended for people who are pregnant or nursing and it's pure torcher! I say go for it, it's worth every penny and then some.
For anyone looking for a cheaper alternative, I've also been using Wen products and I've found that they are working wonders to decrease my drying time and increase my hair's manageability.

A friend of mine bought a groupon for a keratin treatment and the person didn't use keratin, but formaldehyde and a lot of her hair broke off. She did the same to all the other people who bought the groupon as well, and groupon gave them all back their money after they complained. My friend took her to small claims and won, but hasn't been paid yet. So the moral is, be careful who you go to!!
i have done japanese straightening 6 times, 2 times each at 3 salons.
I had a bad experience with a salon where it didn't take very well, so they redid it. my hair got fried and it was breaking off - I had to cut my long hair.
at the other two salons, I had great results.
right now I'm using a protein product from an ebay seller. it is really good. it does not straighten my hair, but it does help relax the frizz a little, and my hair is soft for about 2 weeks at a time
