My first ToTer was about 4. He asked me if I had a boy for him when I asked, "a boy?" He said he was new here and needed a friend. Awwwww. I gave him extra candy.
How cute! Once when my nephew was three or four, I was meeting my sister and him at the beach, and he asked if I was bringing a boy for him to play with. lol.
Our ToTing has been postponed to this weekend due to the hurricane. Even though we're 500 miles from the east coast, we had crazy winds coming off Lake Erie and a lot of people here are without power.

That is both adorabe and makes me want to give him a great big hug. Poor little guy -- I hope he makes friends soon!!
We've gotten a bunch of kids and they've all been really nice but nobody memorable. I hope that little boy finds a friend at one of the houses he visits!

Mine is a Halloween fail.
My daughter had been practicing/pretending to ToT for weeks and has been so excited to go for the first time. She came down with pink eye this afternoon, so we just went to the four houses right next us. The third had two big dogs (visiting--we didn't know they were there), which she is terrified of right now. When the door opened and the dogs started barking loudly, she burst into tears, jumped in my arms and yet, through the scared cry/yelling was still able to squeak out a "trick or treat!" lol
She calmed down and I made a joke about her turning the dogs into toads since she's a witch. "But you didn't make me a wand!!!" And the crying started back up, so we went home. Not the best night for the kid.
The kids seemed grabbier this year--most of them didn't have any parents with them. Maybe at the curb or in a car? Not sure. The weather is super nice tonight so there's really no excuse for them not being with the kids.
I've only had about 15 kids, but one young girl broke away from her parents, barged into the house, and went running around. I was holding my big Lab/Great Dane mix and wasn't really sure what to do, and the parents just stood there like idiots. WTF people!

Three stories from taking 2 4-year olds out tonight:
Who gives out homemade treats any more? People in my 'hood. Yeah, sorry.
Part of out neighborhood is built on a steep hill so there are long, steep stairways up to the doors. Kids go up to ring doorbells while moms stay at bottom of steps and one lady told the kids to come inside her house, and shut the door behind them! Both moms are trying to play it cool but also wanting to haul it up those steps....
One neighbor we know pretended to be handing out packets of hot sauce (like from Taco Bell) instead of candy and DS was all "Oh, okay. Thank you!" Way to go, DS, grace under pressure.
DS (age 4) was a robot, made out of a giant cardboard box. He worked *so* hard putting stickers, bottle caps (buttons--we painted), and spray-painted toilet paper tubes on it as decor and accessories. Got a TON of compliments.
And then... as I was helping him down some steep steps, he missed and fell backwards. Total "turtle turtle" moment, since the box was so big around him. I was trying so hard to hold back my giggles (the box also kept his head from thumping the sidewalk!) that I almost couldn't pick him up.
We had a couple of really cute, appreciative kids. We have two pumpkins on our porch, both of which we grew this summer. One is GIANT and all the kids are like "woah, giant pumpkin!" And the. I tell them we grew it ourselves and they are even more amazed. It warms my little farmer heart :-)
My kid managed to slip by an old lady handing out candy and go into her house unnoticed. We were with a group of about 8 toddlers and only a couple of the parents in the group would walk them up to the door, and the others waited by the street. DH and I walked them up to the door and candy was being handed out, and the next thing I know I see through the lady's big front window that a little shark (my 2 year old son) is walking around in her living room. OMG lol.
One old dude invited Ben into the house! He was like 80 and clearly couldn't handle the door AND the candy bowl at the same time. Ben went right in. Clearly we need to have the stranger-danger chat again.
We had a creepy animated butler thing near the front door. It was sound activated, and when it turned on, it's eyes would light up red and it would say things like, "I'm here to serve you...FOR DINNER!!!"
It made more than one little kid cry, and finally turned it off after a 4-5 year old boy ran off our porch, frantically yelling, "Mommy! MOMMY! GET IT!" I guess we were too hardcore.
We had a total of 3 kids, all in one group. DH didn't even get to give out any candy since he let me answer the first one. So disappointing. And I thought it was bad last year when we only got about 8 kids.
Last night there was this adorable 2-3 year old boy with blonde curls. He was wearing a 3 piece tuxedo, like a ring bearer. I asked him what his costume was (I was thinking orchestra conductor) and he just ran away. His dad said he was 007..awwwww.
Another kid (12ish) had this wooden cross in his bucket and I asked him why he had a cross in his bucket, thinking there was some crazy neighbor handing out crosses. He was like...that's my sword. oops..lol

DS was so excited about his costume (Batman) before last night, and then last night he flat-out refused to wear it. Not any part -- the mask, the cape, even just the belt. We tried to put it on him anyway thinking he was just hesitant and he struggled and started crying so we were like, "This is totally not worth it." He still went trick-or-treating with a friend's kids (two little Barbie pop star princesses -- it's like a whole other world with girls!), and luckily no one hassled him about his lack of costume. Guess you can get away with that when you're cute and 3. :-D

One woman was dressed as a witch and had these glasses that were like googly eyes. She also didn't seem to speak English as a first language, and she kept trying to lure the three kids closer to get candy (two three-year-olds and a five-year-old) and they kept backing further and further away. It was hiLARious. She was like, "Come closer! Take some candy!" but her accent made it sound really harsh and they were like, "Hell, no!"
We had a little spider man that was totally afraid of the giant spider decoration we had out. It was really cute.
My favorite is that I was dressed up as a binder full of women and a little kid came up to me and said "I really like your costume. I think school supplies are neat."

We went as a group of 10 kids and 10 adults. The kids would ring the doorbell and then scream Trick or Treat at the top of their lungs until the door opened. We wondered if we could all pretend not to know them.
They did at least say thank you and happy halloween each time. But still.
We were like, quiet! quiet! And their response was "but we're outside!". So much for teaching the indoor/outdoor voice thing.
I was at my SO's house last night. There were about 200 adorable kids. One of the bags of candy had a coupon in it that somehow ended up in the bowl. A little boy grabbed it and started running towards his mom excitedly yelling "it's a coupon, its a coupon!" I told him to come back and get some candy but he was so excited about the coupon that he just kept running to his mom and yelled back to me "my mom loves these things."
