Does anyone have a Mason Pearson brush? Talk to me about it. Worth it? Does it magically make your hair look like spun gold, like something out of a fairy tale?

cville, thank you! I have also been wanting it for years and years but just seemed to always decide against it. I think I'm going to ask for it for Christmas this year!
I am considering the all-boar one because my hair is fine. What is your hair texture?
I googled it thinking "Oh, a $50 brush, I can check that out! Maybe it'll be something I get for Christmas! Self-treat!!"
$170?! Noooo fucking way dude.
i bought it for myself for my birthday last year, after i got my year-end bonus. after waiting for 10 years. so, cheers and looking forward to 2022 when you pull the trigger and get yours
walter, my hair is very thick, not fine, and while it easily blow dries straight, when i let it air dry it's sort of wavy.

They're not all $170. Also, they're handmade and have a lifetime warranty. I like to pay for quality. My mid-range brush, around $50, is falling apart after two years. I brush my hair a lot. To me, it's worth the price if the product is of high quality. My neighbor growing up had a MP that she had had for-ev-er. She was probably 60 at the time. I remember she brushed my hair with it a few times, but I was young so I don't really remember the outcome.
I'm not saying YOU can't treat yourself with it or that I judge anyone for spending that money.
Just that I can't look at them any closer b/c I can't afford it, lol.
I generally use a comb on my hair anyway (blasphemy, I'm sure!).
oh, no, i wasn't thinking you were judging. i was sympathizing. i started lusting after this brush YEARS before i finally was like "fuck it, i've spent well over $150 on crapass hairbrushes in the meantime by now."
I will try to keep my lust in check until it's more feasible. I had to close the window -- I didn't even read any descriptions, lol!!
I will say it's easier/better to spend the money on a good brush than the million hot appliances that may give similar results to the good brush. Like good makeup -- you need less crap when it's quality.

Oh I know, sorry if I sounded defensive. It IS a big purchase! But I don't really have anything else I want/need for Christmas this year (other than a $1000 camera lens, which I will NOT get) and I've been wanting one for a long time, but also wanted reviews to see if it's actually worth it so that it's not a total waste of dough.

There are some brands that make very similar ones to the MP brush.
I can't remember the names, but I believe if you search through InStyle's online website, it does list it. But, there are also cheap ones that just LOOK like the MP brush so definitely do research before you buy one that's supposed to be similar.
I have a MP knockoff that I love. I'll probably splurge on the real thing this year sometime.
Do you know the brand?
I wish I could get by with a $10 target brush. My hair is extremely fine (like baby hair) and there is a ton of it and it tangles so easily and breaks so easily. Cheap brushes ruin my hair, unfortunately.
Oh, and DH has one of these brushes. I tried it and the only thing it's good for is smoothing the top layer of my hair. This brush doesn't reach down to my scalp so it's useless to me.

*note: I don't see how it could get better for ME...not for someone who isn't a poor. I would imagine the mason Pearson has to be even better than mine- but I don't want to know!!
I bought mine about 7 years ago - the boar bristle and nylon mix for $170. I still feel stupid for spending that much on a brush. Really, it's just a brush. I don't even use it every day and use my $8 drugstore brush more often.
What does it do, or do better, than, say, a drugstore or WF hairbrush?
From what I understand, the detangling is amazing and the way it distributes oils is top-notch. But again, not having tried it, I don't really know. I wish I could get a trial-run.

The only thing it's better for, in my opinion, is pulling hair back in a bun or pony really, really tight and smooth, which I never do. The salon I bought it from gave me the whole it redistributes oil through your hair spiel and I fell for it, but it's a bunch of bologna in my opinion.
