I would like to mail a small gift to a friends 4 yr old. I was thinking a book and "hungry hungry hippos" but it has marbles and she has a 18mth old brother. Should I not buy it to keep the brother out of it? Or should I assume she plays without him sometimes?
Some of my friends prefer not to get toys with choking hazards due to younger siblings. I'd probably avoid that game but not necessarily avoid one that said 3 and up.
We went to a 4 year old party today. The little girl loves loves loves Hello Kitty, so I got her this set of Hello Kitty puzzles & a Hello Kitty Color Wonder pack. She was thrilled.
How about some craft kits? My nieces love doing crafts - painting suncatchers, those foam stickers, etc.
This is exactly what I was going to say. We went to a 4 yo bday party today and gave her a bunch of art/craft stuff (pipe cleaners, stickers, construction paper, glitter glue, sketch pad, etc).
I would only give Hungry Hungry Hippos if you hate her parents. (I can't think of a game that is more painful to listen to when it is being played)
DD's 4 yo party is next week, and she is getting (at least the presents I know about):
Betty Crocker baking magazine with all the ingredients to make one of the recipes
Art stuff
Dress-up clothes (Strawberry Shortcake and Cinderella)
Character/Theme stuff that she is into: Barbies, Littlest Petshop, Polly Pocket, Play Mobil and Strawberry Shortcake
Favorite 'board' games are: Don't break the ice, Memory, Operation (probably her most favorite), Candyland and Cooties
Other things on her list are American Girl books, hair stuff and jewelry, anything to do with Doc McStuffins, and anything that she has ever seen on a TV commercial
DD got Hungry Hungry Hippos for her 4th bday, and she LOVES it. DS was 6 months old at the time, but is almost 18 months now. We only play it on the dining room table, and we keep the marbles in a bag out of reach when we finish playing. DD also really likes counting the marbles when we are done to make sure they are all accounted for.

I know the 4 yr old will love it. It was all my niece wanted when she was 4.

A gift card is actually fun...at that age they like to feel like they have their own "credit card" and go shopping. At least my girls did.
I personally didn't keep my older DD from having games with small parts just because she had a younger sister; I just knew I had to take extra care with the little pieces, put them on higher shelves or in #1s room, etc. So I wouldn't have minded that as a gift, but as with anything parenting related, YMMV. If you're concerned, books are great for both the 4 yo and her sibling.
