We have the type that stays on all night with the picture of the sheep sleeping. I got that one b/c I thought it would be easier for DS to understand if he saw the picture of the sleeping sheep and could see if when he woke up.
The tiny glow of the light has not impacted his sleep. In fact, I think it provides a tiny bit of light for him to play with some of his trains that he sleeps with in the AM when he wakes up a little early and is waiting for the picture to change of the sheep awake. I also liked that it was cordless so when he moves to a toddler bed, I won't have to worry about plugging it in and having issues with worrying about the cord.
It just goes between the outlet and what you're plugging in, and then it turns it on at the time you pick. So you could plug in a lamp and it would turn on at 6 am. That might be even more clear for a young toddler - lamp on = morning. Lamp off = night.

We have the OK to Wake one. It is dark until the light comes on. The light is pretty bright when it does come on though so we keep a hat over it. We don't use it for an alarm though, we use it so my son knows not to get up until the clock lights up at 6 AM because he was getting up very early (4:30). www.amazon.com/Wake-Childrens-Alarm-Clock-Nightlight/dp/B002RNKOM2
I have the Tot Clock. It does everything you are looking for (glows and plays optional music upon waking). It has a blue light at the nighttime setting but you can turn the light off. It also has a naptime, timeout and other timer setting. All ofthese are optional. My daughter loves hers!
We have and love the Good Nite Lite. I *think* you can set the "moon" to turn on at anytime, so you could set it to turn on at 6:55 and then have the sun turn on at 7, perhaps?
