I finally got some! So my question is- do you test every day starting on a certain cycle day? And how strict is the 24 hour window if you see a positive?
I took one yesterday (CD 12) around this time (3 or 4pm) and it was negative. I was going to take another one now. But, DH is out of town and doesn't return until tomorrow evening, so about 27-28 hours from now. If I get a positive today, am I just SOL? I am going to have sex regardless, but am new to the whole ovulation-test game. I guess I need some hand-holding.

When I started out I began testing maybe CD10 or so....once I found out I don't O until ~CD16, I narrowed that window.
I tested morning and night (ahh, the benefits of cheap OPKs!) For me, the first positive was ~48 hours in advance. I say just go for it as much as possible around the time you get positives - you never really know. The cycle I got pg I thought our timing wasn't great - a little early and a little late, but obviously something worked. So who knows.
I started testing on CD 12 and tested every day in the morning. Apparently this isn't what you're supposed to do but it worked for me. I got a + on CD 16 and O'd on CD17 every time. The cycle I got pregnant we had sex for 5 days straight starting on CD14.

A + OPK means that your body is gearing up to O, so if you get a + today and your H gets home tomorrow, you may have perfect timing! I never got a + because I always tested from CD10-CD16 2x per day and then gave up, but was actually not O'ing until much later. If your cycles are typical 28-30 days, you should be fine starting on CD10 and going until you get a +. Some people's surge is much shorter than others, so you may never catch it.
I'm still not sure what's up with my body (last cycle was 38 days), so I just started testing once a day after work at CD12 and am still waiting (CD20) for a +. In the meantime, I'm aiming for sex every second day or more just in case I missed something. If we get a +, we'll do at least every day for a couple days.

I "think" you are supposed to do them between 10am and 8pm, not first thing in the morning. I started on day 7 the first cycle then as other posters have mentioned, you start to learn your cycle.

It's morning for you, but late afternoon for me. The one I just took was around 4:30pm my time.
