Return Day is a Delaware tradition where the candidates for office ride together in a parade and bury a hatchet (for real bury it). I love this tradition. Anyway Biden showed up for part of it and wouldn't talk about 2016. Boo!
Vice President Joe Biden made a surprise visit to the 200-year-old Return Day in Georgetown today, chatting with politicians and staffers who attended a reception at Delaware Tech before a parade through town.
Biden said he was skipping the parade because of security measures that would have to be put in place. His 2008 appearance in the parade drew 10,000 to 15,000.
Among those who greeted the vice president, who was re-elected on Tuesday, were former Democratic Gov. Ruth Ann Minner and former Republican Gov. Pete du Pont. Return Day, which dates to the early 19th century, The event known best for its parades, where winning and losing candidates will parade together in covered carriages and participate in a ceremonial burial of a hatchet.
Many political candidates also use the day to announce their next moves. Biden would not say whether he was seriously considering his own presidential run in 2016. “There’s plenty of time to think about 2016,” Biden said. “We’ve got to get this economy working. If three years from now the economy is not working, it’s not going to be worth doing much. This is all about making Barack an incredibly successful second term president. That’s my focus.”
Biden said he was leaving the reception for an afternoon meeting with the president and the National Security Council.
Asked about the future for his oldest son, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, Biden said, “I think Beau can do anything he wants to do. Whatever he runs for, he’ll win."
“I know he loves being attorney general,” the older Biden added. “It’s a passion for him.”
I thought a reporter asked if this was the last time he'd be voting for himself, and he said no?
Yes, he said that on election day. Typically on Return Day politicians drop hints as to their next campaign. Seems like Joe is concentrating on his job and getting Beau reelected/set up for his next office.
