It was a lot easier in the days before kids and mortgages when I could work long hours and didn't have a budget to meet each month! Oh, and when I had a little Toyota Corrolla that used $2 in gas to drive 50 miles, lol.
So, how is your search going? How long have you been at it?
The job market is not only dry, it seems to be full of employers who lost the script: I spoke to one who interviewed 15 people for a garden variety admin assistant job.
AND they want a second interview after this.
How is he going to remember all of those candidates?
It's really cut and dried; pick 4 candidates tops, interview them over a period of 2 days and then make your choice.
Every single fucking admin position is a pissing contest. Admin assistant 2? I could do this job right out of college. Instead it goes to this person: I have 15 years of experience and know someone in the dept! Okay, you get the job.
I have a feeling this will not change any time soon. It makes me a little scared about this cross-country finding a new job thing.
Employed and half-assed looking. I'm giving networking a try right now. I'm supposed to be updating my résumé right now but that's fallen off my radar this week. I started the networking thing a couple of weeks ago.

I was hardcore looking a couple months ago, thinking I was getting laid off. It didn't happen and they found something for me to do. It's boring and tedious, but it's stable, so now I'm half ass-ing it. Pretty much being more picky about what I apply to, which means I apply to maybe one job every couple of weeks.
It's awful out there. I know someone who applied at Macy's and they did 4 interviews. FOUR! For Macy's!

I hate to say this, but you are making me feel better.
I'm employed, but will be only part-time at the end of the year, and I'm hiring my own replacement for the position I'm giving up.
I'm distraught at the one resume we've recieved so far. If people can send out that crap and expect to get hired, why I can't I find something full-time?

Pretty much this. It's kinda depressing but around here there isn't much.

I've been looking for the last 3 years. I haven't had much luck, but I need to find a job within daycare hours that pays enough to afford daycare. I also live in a really rural area.
I'm looking inside my company. I really like my job and I have potential to move up in it, but I'm always on the look out to jump between departments. My company really likes to move people around inside and give us all different opportunities. I should hear back by Thanksgiving as to whether or not I'm jumping.
The other day I got a call back for a marketing job for a nursing home.
The ad said nothing about marketing experience in a nursing home. I spoke to the hiring manager and she said, "it doesn't matter if you have marketed lightbulbs; all we need is somebody with marketing experience."
That was about 3 weeks ago. I spoke to her last Friday.
First thing she wants to know is "Do you need any additional information?"
I thought she was calling to set up an interview. I told her that I was interested in the job and wanted to come in for an interview amd that my resume was already sent. And when.
She asked, "Do you have long term nursing home experience?" I recanted what she said about the lightbulbs, etc. She got a little testy.
And then she wanted to know "Do you have pharmaceutical experience?"
I told her that even though it isn't on my resume (it is older experience) I had that background and she still got testy. "I got about 200 resumes and I narrowed it down to 4 -- you can send your resume."
Uh, what happened to my resume??? the cover letter had her name on it; she probably lost it.
I told her my resume was already sent and I gave her the date.
And I spent an hour retooling my resume specifically for that job -- I even included my cartoon art and pop art hobby and what type of community activities I was in that involved the arts -- her ad said "creative bent needed."
So I speak to her and she changes the entire game plan???
She doesn't know what she is looking for, period.
These are the people who give hiring managers and companies a bad name. First it's one thing and now she wants another? good luck, sis.
