A few weeks ago, I started waking up to my left toe hurting. At first, I thought it was an ingrown toenail or something. The other night, it was so bad it actually woke me up. The next night, it was fine (the pain goes away during the day). Then last night it came back. But not as bad as that first night. About an hour ago, it started hurting like a bitch again. It feels like surface pain, not in the joint. But it's now red and warm and definitely hurts to the touch.
Well I finally looked it up and pain, redness, warmth in the big toe at night is indicative of the gout.
I'm fat.., aren't I? This is what this is telling me?!

Soak it, get to a doc. Soak it some more.
My super surgeon grandpa was a huge supporter of using antibiotics only in an emergency. "grandpa, my fingers are falling off. What should I do?" "Go soak it."

Oh and P.S. for all you internet doctors out there- I figure you need the whole story. It's not the toenail that is painful/red... it's a little below the bottom of the cuticle. It's totally on the skin of the toe itself- not the nail. Could absolutely still be an infection- but I don't think it's a toenail infection/fungus.

My best guess is shoe/sock irritation that's gotten bad enough to infect. It can totally happen. Try soaking it in warm/hot salted water. If by Monday it's falling off, go to the doc.
