We planned a trip with the H's friend to go to Europe in 2008 that was months in the making, but I didn't know a proposal would also be included. I might have been the last to know, as apparently he had already gone behind my back and discussed this with my parents as well as purchased a ring prior to the trip. He did a good job of hiding it, and the first leg of our trip was in London to stay with a friend of ours who was going through a divorce at the time. The H made snide comments about how women are crazy and that's why he never wanted to get married again, really playing it up so I wouldn't suspect anything.
We fly from London to Venice and our plane was delayed so long that we ended up getting there around 2 in the morning and it was too late to go into town so we just went to bed after checking into the hotel. The next morning, the H is in a rush to get over to the main square and acting really weird, like not letting me stop to browse at the street vendors as we were walking to the square and nearly pulling my arm to get me to "the spot" as quick as he could. I could not understand why he was in such a rush and not letting me relax since it was my first day in Italy.
Finally we get down to the square where the San Marco Cathedral was and he takes the camera out of my hands and gives it to the friend we were traveling with and proceeds to get down on his knee. He gives me a big spiel about how I changed his life and how he appreciates how I can let him "be him" and that he can't imagine a life without me in it. Pulls out the ring box, I smile ear-to-ear (no tears, oddly), and of course say YES as a group of bystanders start applauding and saying "Awwwww". Aftwerwards we had a delicious authentic Italian meal with lots of wine and big smiles all around as I flashed my shiny new diamond ring in the light.
One benefit to having a third-wheel-travel-buddy is that we were able to get pictures of the proposal as it was actually happening, which is really sweet (see below for one of them).
The day he proposed, I picked a HUGE fight with him because he wouldn't get up and walk our dog. (I do this every morning during the week, and didn't think I was asking too much by him letting me sleep in one Saturday.) So I was mad, and cranky. And he decides as I am walking out the door that he'll go with and keep me company. I responded with "Fine. Whatever." So we get outside, and he's goes, "oh, I forgot my phone, be right back." I remember thinking something along the lines of slow, pain in the ass...
So we walk the normal route, up to the school, and back through the neighborhood (all total about a mile and a half). The dog does his business, so I am now carrying poop. We get to the pool (where a trashcan is) and I throw it out, to keeping walking towards home. He was like "Hey, let's go to the top of the hill first." (Backtracking a bunch to get to said hill.) So I grumpily said "Fine." (This hill is where I watch the sunrise most mornings, above our entire neighborhood.)
We get to the top of the hill, he tells me to close my eyes for a sec, he had a surprise. I did, felt something on my chest, and then he told me to open my eyes. He was in front of me, on one knee with a box, and I had a Post-It note (there's a whole story behind this) on my chest that said "Will you marry me?"
Apparently he had planned to place post it notes around the house, leading to him and the ring to ask, but I foiled that by picking a fight. So this was his last minute back up plan. (ETA: He had also been ring shopping for six months, and planning the actual proposal for two. I had no idea!)

We met in 2003 working together at Eckard Drugs. I was in the pharmacy and he was a manager. From the moment I met him I knew we would be together forever.
Our First date was at the University of Florida where we attended a show, Miss Saigon and walked around the campus all night talking.
Over the next few weeks we got to know each other pretty well. I was graduating high school and he was graduating College. We had our first kiss in business corridor at UF.
We then moved to Tampa where I attended the University of South Florida! School was hard and he was always there to help me study and get myself through.
May 17th was free Art Museum day in downtown St. Pete and I really wanted to go and show him the downtown area because we rarely get around there and I love looking back at History. It was early in the morning and I was showing him my favorite spot on USF's St. Pete campus. The Beach. We were walking around and I was trying to point out what Poynter Institute was and he grabbed my arm turned me around bent down and pulled out the ring. I was shocked and happy! I of course said yes and then proceeded to call my mother! We also called his mom and she was so happy.
We did the museum day and had a really nice lunch at the Columbia. I will always cherish May 17th for the proposal but also to remind myself about making my own history!
We had taked about getting married on Oct 16 of 2010, so my h waited until lunch time, when I was at work on the 16 of 2009 to ask me. He sent me a movie of his proposal, and if you want me to I post the link later, since I can't get on youtube at work, and after I watched the movie and cried I walked outside and he met me in the parking lot. He told me to close my eyes and when opened them he was standing there and shining in the brilliant sunlight was my three stoned ring that I wanted. He then put it on my finger and took me to lunch.

Awww... I love these stories.
OPS, I'm jealous -- I've never been to Europe before. I love that you have a picture of the proposal!
Liz -- that is an adorable story! I like that it was you and him and the dog. So cute!
I don't have a great proposal story. Hubby and I are kind of boring. We had been together for almost 8 years and talked about marriage so I said, "how about we get married next year." And he said "ok."
A few months later I found a pear-shaped stone I really liked at a Zales outlet and told him about it. When he went to buy it, it was gone (I found this out later). So, a few months passed and finally he told me, "Look, I have a pear shaped diamond (it was his grandma's that his mom gave him) and I can't find a setting I like. Do you want to pick it out?"
So, I said, "of course!" and we went and tried to find something for a few weeks before we decided to go custom.
Then when the ring came we were just engaged. He did "ask" me but it was kind of joking since he knew what I was going to say!

Short version: I came home from work on his birthday. I said, "how has your birthday been so far?" He said, "Really good. Wanna make it even better?" and tossed me the ring box.
Short version: He surprised me with a ring on a gondola at the Venetian in Vegas. He was so nervous, but still tried to get down on one knee and almost flipped the gondola over.
Ala--that's a really sweet story! OPS--that's awesome! Especially since he had to go through Customs with it!! Eureka & Trouble & Darkling-- Louie--that sounds cute!
Darkling--I will also add that I refused to put it out there (i.e. FB) until he talked to my parents. So he put his status as "Pogo approves. " (He ran around both of us and tangled us together with his leash.) My sister was the only one who liked it, aside from me. Apparently he had been working with her to get the right ring, and knew he had had it for awhile, so she knew it was coming.

Aw, these are so sweet! I love reading proposal stories.
We went to Italy in December 2008. We were there over Christmas so everything was decorated beautifully with Christmas lights strung over the streets. We had been there for about a week visiting different cities throughout the country when we arrived in Rome.
One night right before Christmas we were wandering around Rome when we got to the Spanish Steps which had poinsettas everywhere and a Christmas tree lit up at the top. The view of the city from the steps was also beautiful. My H bought me a rose and I suddenly just had a feeling of "This is it!" Before he even pulled out the ring I started crying, lol. He held my hands and told me how much the last few years of dating meant to him and how I'm his best friend, then got down on one knee. I didn't even put the ring on and jumped up to hug him. He actually had to say, "ILikeSloths, put the ring on so I don't drop and lose it." Ha.
We had a few friends nearby who had no idea this was going to happen either, so when they saw my H down on one knew they started snapping photos, hollering, and clapping. But I didn't even know this until later because I didn't hear anything else going on around me. It's funny how that happens when you're so excited and in the moment.
It was my birthday and the last day of the summer before I had to go back to college three hours away. We packed a picnic lunch and went for a hike in a state forest where there is a waterfall and a big pond. We watched the water for a while, then decided to wade out into the pond and watch the sun setting. It was totally quiet and peaceful and we were watching the cranes swoop in and land in the water.
We chatted a bit about how wonderful the summer had been together and how we couldn't wait until I could move with him full-time, then I said we should probably get going. He said, "I need to ask you something first," and my heart just about jumped out of my chest. He got down on one knee right there in the water and said a ton of beautiful things that I immediately forgot and pulled the ring from his pocket. I was completely surprised and cried like an idiot for about 15 minutes. Finally we hiked back to the car and drove to meet a group of friends for a night out-- best birthday ever!
We were engaged 4th of July weekend 2007. I knew it was coming, since we already picked out the ring. We drove to Morro Bay. (long ass drive) We went and watched the fireworks, he got to nervous to propose in front of people, so he waited till we got pack to the hotel room.
We went to an old Inn that was built in like 1792 for dinner a couple of weeks before Christmas. There are several rooms sectioned off where you can sit, and we just so happen to be in one of the rooms alone. Well he started saying all this mushy stuff to me then pulled out the ring. He didn't get down on one knee, which I was glad about b/c I hate being the center of attention like that in public (even though we were alone in the room).
I kind of knew it was coming though, in the weeks beforehand he would mysteriously have to go to the mall and I couldn't go with him. He's real sneaky that one. Not!

At the time ker worked sun-thur so he used to take me to work on Fridays then go up to his brothers to play around on the card in the garage. I was all ready to go, hopped in the 'stang when suddenly he says he forgot something in the house so he ran back in. He comes back out, hops in and takes me to work as normal.
Work day ends, he picks me up. I didn't notice he was in different clothes. We get home, he stays in the entry way taking crap out of his pockets. Nothing unusual dice he always did that and then would go to the basement to get undressed and washed up after playing in the garage. I go to get the mail, come back to the kitchen ( he's still in these entry way unloading mean while I have swarming vats wanting to be fed.
Finally! I go to the pantry to get a can of cat food and there atop the cans is my ring in its box with the lid open. I was a bit befuddled as to how it got there as it was NOT there that morning. Finally he took the ring from me ( I'm still standing there speechless), got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I of course said yes.
He didn't forget anything that morning but instead went back inside to put my ring on the cat food cans. I love how he incorporated my babies (cats) into it.
Hmm...never even suspected a thing but then again, at that time we had only been dating for 5 months.

Mine's pretty short~ We have an annual 4th of July party (but actually on the 3rd) and he always did a firework display right at dusk. He asked me in front of everyone and when I said yes, fireworks started going off. Imagine if I said no... lol. But we had talked about it and I had picked out some rings I liked so I knew it was coming, just not the day.
Then 5 years later almost to the minute, a firework hit his head and disaster pretty much struck. Everything is great now but I'm not sure if that's supposed to be some sort of bad sign for our relationship, but I'm hoping not! Thankfully I'm not that superstitious. We have continued our party tradition, just minus the fireworks now. Obviously.
I'd been out of town, and he took me up into the Sunsphere after picking me up from the airport. It had reopened just a week earlier after being closed since the Worlds Fair. The Worlds Fair was in 1982, so I hadn't been up in that thing in 25 years.

Our engagement started a month before the actual proposal. We were in my hometown for Christmas and we went to a neighborhood that really goes to 11 with the decorations. One house had a tree with a table and on the table were strips of paper, pens, and a stapler. The idea was to write a wish on a strip, then add it to the paper chain that was circled around the tree. We showed each other our wishes. Mine was "to love him always," and his was "to be with her forever." We hadn't even talked marriage at that point, so it was a cool realization that we were thinking along those lines. We spent the rest of the night whispering quietly (we were with my family) about getting engaged and married.
Fast forward a month later, and we went to Dave & Buster's with my family for my dad's birthday. At one point I went to the restroom, and he sat my parents and sister down and asked for their blessing. I knew he had the ring to show them and he kept faking me out like he was going to do it there.
The next evening, after they all left to go back to my hometown, we made dinner together and opened a bottle of wine. We ate and talked and had fun and then he asked me to dance with him, right there in the living room in our pajamas. After a few minutes, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him
