Wanted to formally introduce myself. I posted a little while ago about a possible adoption. Well, I met our boys and we have a coming home date of 12/12/12! They are 22 months and 4 yo, and absolutely adorable!
We are excited, but have a lot to do in a month. Any words of wisdom? Life-saving gadgets for those ages?

Yay!
I can't think of anything specific you need to have other than the obvious. Is the four year old potty trained? If not, a little potty and all that jazz. Art supplies and beads were popular with my kids at age four.
I have a 28-month year old little boy and he loves all trains and cars. They have these magnetic ones from ikea that he loves playing with. They're cute and more reasonably priced than say a Thomas the Train toy.
If you really want to go all out, you might look at a train table. That would probably entertain both boys.
I second (third? fourth?) the cars suggestions. Also, toy tools, wiki stix, play doh. A zoo membership (if you have one nearby) can also be a great opportunity for both outings and bonding over an experience. No "life saving gadgets" other than a variety of activities available since attention spans can still be short.

Congratulations!!! What exciting news!!!
I have a little girl, but in my experience with little boys in playgroup, you're going to want some way for them to run off energy. How cold is it where you live? I'd get some outside toys -- ride on car, tricycle (both of those can be used inside too, if you have room), plastic bat and ball, lots of balls to throw. Kids' consignment stores are great for these sorts of things. One of those plastic slide/playhouse combos would be good if you can one for cheap -- the 4 year old might be a big too old for it, but he'll likely still play on it.
I agree with art supplies. Coloring books, crayons (I like the Melissa and Doug ones -- hard to break), stickers. Also a train set. What about Duplo blocks? My DD loves those.
At their ages, I'd take them shopping to choose what they like. I think it'd be a good bonding experience and chance to learn what they're into.
I think this is an awesome idea. You just never know what a kid is into until you have been around them. I have 5 and 2 year old boys, and they have both been into totally different stuff. My 5 year old has always been all about building toys (Duplo, then Lego especially), animals, dinosaurs, and action figures. My 2 year old likes that stuff, too, but is also more into sports and balls than his brother. DS1 had a love affair with fire trucks for a while, but other than that neither kid has been big into trucks or cars, and we have a bunch of Thomas trains and tracks that have gone virtually ignored for five years now.
