We started on a straw sippy around 9 months. She never did a regular sippy.
She was given her own spoon to hold and try to use from the day we started feeding solids. She started really trying to use them most of the time around 10, 11 months? She's always been pretty good with them.
We gave DS a sippy last weekend for the first time and it was a total failure. He figured out how to put it in is mouth but wouldn't tip it so nothing came out. He screamed. If we tried to help him he screamed. We just took it away because it wasn't worth the screaming. We'll try again later.

DD could never figure out a regular sippy, so we went straight to straw sippies.
I taught her how to use one by letting her use a Take and Toss straw cup because those don't have any valves, so the liquid is easy to get out. Once she had the hang of those, we moved on to the kind with valves that don't spill.
I can't remember when she started using utensils, but it was definitely a decision she made. Forks took a long time, but she used spoons fairly early -- sometime between a year and a year and a half, maybe?? She would feed herself greek yogurt early on -- I started with that because it was thicker and would stay on the spoon easily. I think she started feeding herself cereal with milk before she turned two??
DS is 8.5 months, we've tried a regular and straw sippy a few times since 6 months, with no success. He can't tip the regular sippy, and he just chews on the straw. We're going to try again in a few weeks.

We started the sippy at about 9 months, it took him awhile to figure it out. We started with Nuby ones with the spot more like a nipple. He now prefers the staw ones. We started witha spoon about 1 year maybe? He can use it pretty good for yogurt and applesauce but refuses to use it for anything else and still uses his hands, he's 19 months now.
DS was using utensils with messy results just after a year. He's almost 22 months now and can do cheerios with milk and is working on chopsticks. The boy loves food so anything to get food to his mouth he wants to learn.
For sippy cups, it took him awhile to figure it out. I removed the valve for a little bit so he could figure out why he'd want to do something with it.
I give my 16 month old spoons sometimes but he has no clue how to eat with one. I'm not too worried he'll pick it up soon enough. He picked up sippy cups really fast though -- maybe by 10 months? I had ones that were soft like bottle. He now uses a straw cup.
