What sorts of things are your boys into these days? And what are you planning to buy them for whateverholidayyoucelebrate?
My son and his friend were playing at our house after school, and his friend says "Well I already have a DS, so this Christmas I want a Wii-u!" and my son said "Well, I don't have a DS or a Wii-U so I'm putting both on my list, but I really want a Wii-u! Oh, and a TV for my room, a 3D tv." :-|
I really cringe at the thought of buying him another video game console of any sort. He spends so much time on electronics as it is (whether the wii, ipad or laptop).
So I'm hoping I can redirect him to other ideas. But aside from Legos and a Club Penguin membership (which he's already asked for) I'm drawing a blank.....
The boys play Skylanders on Wii, Legos, arts and crafts, Scooby Doo. Phinnes and Ferb, and a few other shows. Jon also likes knights and dragons and army men. Both boys like superhero toys and angry birds as well.
DS is 6.5 yrs. old so he is almost in that age range and he is getting a razor scooter, a couple board games, several books that he wanted from the book fair at school, pajamas, and a few small lego kits. In addition to these he asked for a skate board which we will likely get him for his birthday.
I have an 8-year-old nephew. His big favorites are Lego and Minecraft, but he also likes Angry Birds, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Phineas and Ferb, Tony Hawk, anything remote controlled, and anything that launches or can be launched.
Last weekend I bought him these Angry Birds Flingers at Costco just for the heck of it. They're small plush Angry Birds heads that you stick on a stick and basically fling them around the house. They were a big hit.
For his eighth birthday last month I bought him Angry Birds Mission Mayham, which is a real-life Angry Birds game. You set up the beams and blocks and place the pigs, and launch birds at them. (If you get this, note that only the red and white birds are included; yellow, blue, and black are sold separately; you can find them under the "customers who bought this also bought" heading.)
Jinx is my cool-aunt secret weapon. They have merch for basically any video game. He and his older brother are waaaaay into Minecraft, so last year for Christmas I got them t-shirts, some stickers, and a set of magnets that simulate the game. He loved it so much that I already have this year's t-shirts and stickers ordered.
He recently got this Joker Fun House game for his birthday and even though it says it's for ages 4 - 6, he loves it and we play it nearly every time I see him.
Last year for Christmas I got him this Playmobil Agents set and a few small auxiliary items. He played with them a lot; it's something to assemble but not Lego. I'm surprised that this is a 4 and up item; I don't think he would have been able to fully enjoy it at age 4 or even 5.
Mindware has a lot of good stuff for this age group. Magna Mosaics and Qwirkle are both a lot of fun. They're both games he'll pull out to play with us or with his friends.
His "big" birthday gift this year from my sister and BIL was a guitar, and he's currently taking guitar lessons. And his big Santa gift this year is going to be an iPod Touch, which I know doesn't solve your screen problem, but I'm listing everything that's coming to mind right now.
