My niece (who is really more like our own kid) graduates in December. We are writing her a fat check (we wanted to do a trip, but that will have to wait due to everyone's schedule at the moment) but I want to give her something in addition to $$$.
If you have any ideas to share of things you loved from graduation, I would appreciate it...

Is she moving out to go live on her own? I got a tool kit that had a hammer, wrench, screwdriver, tape measure and other basic items. It was SO nice to have this. We still keep it in our pantry and is great. You end up needing those things more than you think.

She already has an off campus apartment, but this is a good idea. CTS, thanks for the ideas too. H and I have tons of portfolios from clients/vendors laying all over the house...haha. I didn't think of that for personalization. Traditional jewelry sounds good too.
Is she graduating from high school or college? (Duh, reading helps.)
How much do you want to spend?
Ideas: laptop or tablet, e-reader, pearl necklace, diamond or pearl stud earrings, nice briefcase or work-appropriate purse, gift card to get a well-tailored business suit, guidebook/language tutorial program for a place where you'd like to send her in the future.

We bought her a laptop last year, and nice case. I really like the FLR card case. Great ideas. Thanks all!
Jewelry. I think it is a great way to mark such an important event. My mom gave me a diamond bracelet when I graduated (it was an extra special gift since I graduated first in my class) and it is so special to me. She doesn't normally do things like that. I think of it every time I wear it.
Especially since you already plan to do give cash, which is what most kids want.
