I'm hoping they are still on sale for $0.59 a pound when I get around to buying mine. No, not free range. I don't think they even sell those in my town.
Free! I got a Butterball from work. We got an organic, free range turkey last year, and while I my conscience felt better, my tastebuds did not. Dry as hell.
Honestly, the best turkey I've ever had was the pastured one last year. 100x better than Butterball and even my picky aunt was my impressed. It's all in the brine.
HERE IS THE THING: free range turkeys don't taste as good. They tend to be gamier than injected turkeys. Cooks Illustrated has done a number of taste tests over the years and I belive Butterball is usually the winner for taste and tenderness.
My Butterball was free with my $300 grocery purchase over the past month. Free range be damned -- if I am spending my whole day cooking it better be good!
We just picked up Tom last night from our local co-op. The one we picked out was hormone-free, local, humanly raised, vegetarian fed, and organic--- $2.49/lb. They also had ones who had all that criteria PLUS were free range... those were $4.49/lb. I just could justify buying a bird that was double the price. Sorry, little penned up guy!
