Is it safe to get a massage during first trimester? Info I've read online is conflicting. More importantly, would it be enjoyable?
I have a living social voucher for a massage that expires in a few weeks. I'm not really interested in going because the thought of lying face down while my boobs are this sore is not appealing at all. I tried asking LS for a refund but they said no because it's past the 7 day return period.
So I guess my choices are either to go and get the massage, try to argue with LS for a refund, or just eat the money and let it be.
Thoughts? (And I have never had a massage so this whole thing is new to me so maybe I'm missing something)
I go and don't tell them I'm in pregnant because some places freak out because they are afraid people will sue them for causing a m/c that would have happened anyway. There is no actual danger in getting a massage, but 1st tri m/c are so common, a lot of places don't want to take the chance.
If you are uncomfortable on your belly, just tell the therapist and they can work mostly with you on your back and then have you on your side for part of it. You don't even need to tell them why.
they won't do them first tri, but second/third is fine.
my leak happened the day after I got a massage in 3rd tri and I will always wonder if they were related It was a table with the hole in it so I could be on my stomach. The massages I got in 2nd tri I laid on my side or stomach.
I always heard that you are not supposed to because of the toxins released in your body. I think I heard this from someone who works as a massage therapist. I would gift the voucher to your H or a friend.

Most massage therapists (and spas, etc.) will not perform massages on women in their first trimester for liability reasons. There is no scientific proof that massage could cause a miscarriage, but who wants to take that risk? If you do find a place that will do it, make absolutely sure that they do not use much pressure on your lower calves, ankles, or feet.

That is crap. Of course you heard it from someone who is a MT, because it's the same crap they tell you after every massage that you need to drink a ton of water to clean out the "toxins". But of course, no one can ever name what those toxins are or why they weren't harming you while in your muscles or whatever. Crap.

I think I was already in 2nd tri when I got a massage, but I had a groupon expiring, so I just called the place and asked if they do prenatal. I had to pay like $10, but I got to lay on my side instead of my tummy (like I do at my monthly prenatal massages now).
In regards to the toxins being released-I haven't done research on this or anything but one time I had a light swedish massage and went on a drinking binge right after (no other fluids). The next day I woke up and my body was the most painful it has EVER been. It wasn't even a hangover type of feeling and I have drunk much more without my body feeling like that. I thought I was DYING and could not leave the bed for 2 days. After that experience, I always drink lots of water after a massage!
