I heard two stories similar to this last year. One ended well and the other didn't. My kids know that I flip my shit if they play with the seatbelts and yet they still do it from time to time. Seatbelts scare me.

thanks for posting this- i just shared on my local board and FB -- something I have never even considered being a danger in the 5.5 years of having kids... I have a belt cutter and scissors in my car at all times- but never even thought of needing it for something like that!
How scary and awful. I try to always listen to that little voice inside. It rarely does me wrong.
I bought a small multi function tool from Eddie Bauer back in the day. It's a knife, scissors, screw driver, etc etc that I keep in my car console & I always have a Swiss Army knife in my purse. McGuyver4Lyfe

How scary.
Another reason I'm glad I have a Life Hammer in my car (http://www.amazon.com/Original-Life-Hammer-Escape-Orange/dp/B000BMWXZM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1353202770&sr=8-2&keywords=Car+window+breaker).
This is so scary! It reminds me of the time I was visiting a friend and her daughter was crying/whining from another room. She asked me to check on her since she was nursing her new baby. Her daughter was playing with her carseat (in her foyer because they were switching vehicles) and she clipped the straps but then tried to slide out from the bottom and was basically strangling herself. She had the straps so tight up against her neck I couldn't unsnap them and was panicking until I thought to shove her back up into the seat so i could unsnap them. I didn't calm down from that for a while.
I never let my kids play with their carseats as a result of that.
My in laws let my son play in their cars for fun. He's 3, but they've been doing this since he was a lot younger. It enrages me but they are all "we're right here..." and my thoughts are just "now my kid thinks the car is a playground and what if he somehow gets in mine alone and gets hurt?". I'm going to pass this along super passive aggressive style.
How traumatizing! So glad she is okay. Thanks for sharing. I bought seat belt cutters for both cars a year ago and they are still sitting on a shelf upstairs. They will go in each car as soon as I get home.
my neighbors often leave their minivan doors open during the day if they are going in and out of the house, playing outside, etc. It makes me nervous. I don't know why they do it, maybe to air out the van? It's kinda weird.
I always keep a scissors in the car since I have seen 20/20 specials about adults being trapped by seatbelts in after a car accident. But I appreciate this post b/c I never though about a kid being accidentally trapped. I also did not know there is a seatbelt cutter product. I am going to pick one of those up instead.
