I LOVE love love side-lying nursing in bed. I had to wait a bit because of recovery from c/s and collapsed lungs but it made things so much easier. I think I probably started around 8-10 weeks and after that did it exclusively until 2 months ago. It also made bedsharing a dream. I got so much sleep until he became more mobile and was rolling around in bed.
We aren't great at it yet but it helped when my LC told me to lean back. I kind of feel like I'm smothering him if I don't. I am probably a DD cup now.
I think this is one area where big boobs really help... And experience helps too. With my first, I think she was 2mo before we figured it out, I need her to have head control first. With the 3rd kid, I nursed her side lying in the hospital.
Love side lying bf. It was a long time before we could because he kept trying to smother his nose into my big old boobs, but he became a pro around 4 months. Nursing has been the only way I've ever been able to get him to successfully nap without crying, so now that I can get him to sleep in bed (instead of on the nursing pillow) I get to vacate the area and enjoy the time off
I side lying nursed from day one with DD3. Yeah I think big boobs & experience help a lot. My DDs nursed while I slept lots. My mom recommended it--lol.

I have fairly medium boobs (34 c before pg, 34dd while nursing) and I could do it. With DS, it took a while for him to get a sorting enough latch to stay on. With dd she could do it at birth. Probably a combo of my skill and her strong suck.
I laid on my side with my knees tucked up to support myself. I put my top arm between my legs if that makes sense. Helped hold me upright.
My ppd got so so so much better when DS figured it out. I was still up at night, but it was for a few seconds to latch on instead of for 30 min.
I used pillow(s) to help position me for the first few months. We started side-lying nursing in bed within the first week home. I had a pillow under my head and another behind my back/hips. I'd say I was at more of a 45* angle than a 90* - my boobs were about a DD and sort of aim outward enough that it worked really well.
The sweet spot on my rest was months 2 and 3 where he stopped needing to be changed all the time and I could nurse while sleeping.
While this thread is active, anyone have any tips for feeding off the top boob without climbing over to the other side of the baby?
A couple of times I propped myself on the elbow closest to the baby, then leaned the either boob over, but it wasn't really comfortable and defeated the purpose of BF on my side. I found it easier to move the baby; they only nursed on one side by this point, so if they fed at 1am on the right side, I'd feed on the left side at 4am.

I had to wait until 5-6 months when my supply leveled out more and my unused side wasn't hard as rocks. It was way way uncomfortable but now I can. I just roll and tuck the bedside boob under and offer the top side. I don't have huge breasts, just 34C, so that may make it easier.
