I just finished the sample after seeing it mentioned here a few times. Two of the four sample chapters were Amy's diary entries. I found her cutesy voice and "dude" speak really annoying.
Do the diary entries continue? Not sure I want to buy. But I often take time warming up to a book.
I'd say give it a little more. You might never like the characters, but Amy's voice definitely changes throughout the novel -- she gets older, for one thing, and her character develops, so to speak. Can you get it from a library and avoid the cost?
It's not my favorite book, and I didn't find it memorable, but I think you'll like Amy a lot more as you get into the book. Or else you'll hate her more, but not for the cutesy voice reason. If the Nick chapters intrigue you, read it. If you're just really not interested, don't. It's hard to say more without giving much away, though.

Ugghhhh I am reading this now and can't put it down. I have work to do and an exam tomorrow but I can't stop reading! I started it yesterday and am 86% through (thank you Kindle). Agree with others that the cutesy Amy stuff gets better.
I started a thread about it on CEP because I hated this book so much, LOL. The first half is spectacular. Then you get the first major twist and it deteriorates from there. However I will say that although the book was controversial at my book club meeting, I was the most negative on it so my opinion may not be dispositive.
Regardless, let's just say that I'm glad (1) I didn't pay money for the book; and (2) I'm a fast reader and wasted less time on this book than might otherwise be the case.
If you decide not to finish, look at the CEP thread for spoilers. :-)

I disliked this book so much I returned it unfinished (but since I have a long-standing and odd to some habit of always reading the last chapter of a book first, I did know how it ended and even that didn't make me want to continue).
