My 5.5 year old boy is obsessed with Legos, especially the Ninjago, Star Wars, and Harry Potter lines. Beyond that he likes Avengers, X-Men, and Star Wars toys--action figures, sticker books, etc. The Star Wars Guess Who game is a favorite of his. Last week we were at his friends house and the kid had this pump and balloon kit from www.rocketballooon.com. We took it to the park and every 4-8 year old boy there was begging to use it. It's in your price range, and they would probably have a lot of fun with it.

SD2 is almost 6, and is on a fairy kick. Target had some launchable fairies that we're thinking of picking up, but she also wants Squinkies, Polly Pocket and My Little Ponies. For games, she loves Don't Break the Ice, Ant in the Pants, and Candy Land. Legos are also popular, but less so than the toys.
You can't go wrong with a big thing of crafting supplies. Tissue paper, pipe cleaners, etc. I usually just go to town at Michael's. Both SD's have a DIY Build-a-Bear that we helped them put together that they love.
ETA: if the link doesn't work, it is the shrinky dink monster lab.
I got this for my 6 year old nephew, and the fairy treehouse version for my niece. My kids loved them. For 5-6 year old birthday parties, I usually stick to buying crafts b/c I never know what toys they have.
Playmobil. I don't know what the sets retail for in the U.S., but I've seen a lot of cute ones here for 14 or 15 Euros.
If you live near a good kids' bookstore, they usually organize books by age and put the hot-sellers in special displays (or will gladly recommend titles if you talk to a bookseller).
A lot of 5 and 6 y.o. girls I know are also really into those make-your-own-jewelry sets. They can't get enough of them since they go through sets quickly.
My kids (ages 5 and 7, boys) are obsessed with legos....specifically star wars and ninjago. My youngest also loves drawing, coloring etc. I have heard a lot of good reviews about the stomp rocket...i'm going to look into that!
