(long, sorry)
DS had a lot of troubles pooping when he was first born. We had to get him tested for a bunch of stuff, but in the end it turned out he just couldn't relax his rectum enough to let even gas out until about three months or so.
So, he's been really holding out against potty training. He's in regular undies all day and night, pees routinely on the potty, but then insists on pooping in a diaper when he needs to go. He also does a lot of walking around and crouching to get the poop out.
We tried everything to get him to go on the potty -- major bribes, Miralax, etc. If he wasn't allowed a diaper he would just hold it and hold it until his stomach was swollen and he was in pain, and then I'd cave and give him a diaper. We tried one more time, telling him there were no diapers at Grandma's house when we flew down there for a visit, but it totally flopped. He saw them in my purse, and then it was all over.
So, we decided to back off. All of a sudden last week, he said, "I'm going to poop on the potty and get Cliffjumper" (the Transformer we had been offering him for more than a month as a bribe). And, easy as that, now he's going on the potty every time. He still says, "It's going to hurt!" before he goes, but then he goes and says it doesn't hurt.
So, hooray! Everyone told me not to stress and that he'd do it on his own, and I guess they were right.
I am with you! DS is 3 years 4.5 mos. He started peeing on the potty last August. I thought it was too early so we went with it but didn't push it. Then as it neared 3 we started pushing it a little more. He wouldn't go. We also offered a special toy. He was very excited when he finally did it. Then we had a few bumps (we "took the toy away" - it's a hot wheels track attached to the wall so we couldn't actually move it.). He started saving the poops for school and then he'd hide on the playground in his training undies. He finally got it when we were out of town in basically an outhouse with my family. They were all excited and gave him high fives. He says his car toy is happy every time he poops. It's been 5 weeks now and other than a little blip in the tub when DH didn't get him out in time, we've been going on the potty and we're now at real underwear instead of trainers when we go out. I'm very interested to see how he does at Thanksgiving when he's playing with friends all day. He also has a general tendency to strip down the moment he feels like he needs to go no matter where he is (at home). So I think when we're at friends' houses he might do the same LOL

yay!!!!!! like they say - nobody goes to college pooping in diapers (well, obviously, if someone has special needs they might, but you catch my drift)
one of my twins has been a hold out.... he will go potty at school ALL DAY every day -but once he is home he only wants pullups. I'm planning to put him into undies after xmas while we are home that week and praying it works this time (he started to PT back in july but then lost all interest).
glad it's working for your little one!
Constipation is no joke - my 5yo has it - we give him lactulose every morning to keep things going. I actually sell a drug for constipation but it's not approved for kids (yet)... it's such a hard thing to go through - esp when PT'ing!

Yay! That's awesome!
DD1 has been peeing on the potty since August with only one accident so far. She absolutely refuses to poop on the potty though. Your story gives me hope
Our issues with poop were due to constipation. Once we fixed that (prune juice lol) she was ready.
It's sooo nice having a potty trained kid who tells me when she needs to go and can go on her own! (Well, at home where she is comfortable and has her step stool).
