OMG there's a barely alive rat in the basement

Dh was getting ready to put some boxes down in the basement and found a rat. +o(

It's barely alive. We have no idea what to do...he can't bring himself to kill it.

What the heck do we do?!?!

Call an exterminator. They come same day, will do what they need to do with it-either set it free in a field, or put it out of it's misery. They'll also do a free inspection to tell you if you have more you need to worry about. When I had a scare, I called terminix, and they came in a few hours.

Okay fine, I called 3 exterminators and scheduled them all to come the same day. Terminix showed up first, so I cancelled the other 2.

Yeah, there's lots of rats in this area. I would call an exterminator and get it taken care of. They can also look for places in your house where they can get inside and then take care of it for you. I've seen one outside walking along our fence. It was huge. Thankfully, we haven't seen any inside.

Personally, I would just kill it. But I guess that's my (genetic) farm roots talking, lol. One of my co-workers had to do this recently too. Must be the weather!

amanda, after you kill it, what would you do? just throw it away? put it on the side of the street? look for more?

the logistics of killing a rat are too much for me to deal with.

Is it illegal to put it in a bag and then put that in the garbage? Otherwise I guess I'd just bury it like a pet (like a pet).
