since you all had to listen to me whine about the delays, I figured I should share the final results.
We're really happy with how they look. It's not perfect (nothing ever is I guess) but it's damn close. Now to actually bite the bullet and put the furniture on them and let the dog upstairs...
Living room before and after:
Master bedroom before and after:
Nursery before and after (this room had by far the most messed up floors. Tons of pet stains)
Back bedroom before and after:
As you can see, we decided to go with a light stain rather than a darker color or just plain poly. Once he had the floors sanded down and put down some test swatches it turned out we both really liked the cherry stain. It just gives the wood a hint of reddish color (rather than yellow) and really brings out the grain.

Beautiful! The lighter color makes the rooms brighter than a darker stain. Don't sweat the scratches - I used to wince every time our pup started barking at a passerby and scratching up the floor. It's patina, not decay .
we had our floors refinished before moving in and we have 2 large dogs that have left scratches all over the place. I just tell myself that they are distressed, not ruined. for me, as long as they are surface scratches, not a big deal. I'd rather have my dogs and scratched floors rather than no dogs and pristine floors.
