I always just bought nice ornaments in a color scheme, until we had kids.
As a baby we called our daughter our cupcake and someone gave me a pink glittery glass cupcake ornament last year. And I made ornaments with my daycare kids that have their fingerprints in brown, and antlers and a nose drawn on to turn them into reindeer. Those are my favs.
This year at daycare we are painting our hands white, putting it on an ornament and adding details to the fingers to make them look like snowmen. I am sure I will treasure that one too.
I plan to add the special ornaments like this to my tree until I get enough, and then I will do a formal tree and a fun "memory" tree.

My favorite ornaments on our tree are some I "stole" from my parents when I was old enough to set up my own household. No idea where they got them, but they are red plastic and sort of notch together. There's a reindeer and a santa/sleigh one. I've loved them since childhood, pretty much.
My favorite ornaments are the ones DH and I have collected over the years on different vacations. I love remembering where we were when we bought them.
I have a spongebob trio I really like (it reminds me to never take myself too seriously) , an ornament that looks like my dog, and my first nest ornament exchange ornament
I have a Countdown to Christmas one..it's so fun to watch the days digitally tick by. My sister bought it for Rubes. Prior to that, my MIL always buys us an ornament with some symbolism. But it's like random/odd even symbolism. Hilarious.
Every year since we've been married I've bough or been given a picture frame ornament with the year on it that I put a photo of us in. It's fun to pull them out every year. Another favorite is a Swarovski snowflake ornament a family friend bought us one year. I'm sure there are other ones but I can't think of them right now and we're not even close to having our tree up yet...
The ones from our HM, the one that has Sadie as a puppy and my exchange ornaments from internet land.
Last year I bought a menorah ornament that is glass and really pretty. I don't get to put up the menorah at home with my parents anymore, but it's a nice reminder of my ethnicity and heritage since we're not practicing Jews.
I just feel like every ornament we own is meaningful and special to me, whether it is inherited, was a gift, purchased/collected, acquired on vacation or is something that has been turned into an ornament but is a reminder of a special moment in our lives. My big tree gets decorated with a healthy mix of all of the above...old inherited glass balls, newer beautiful glass ornaments that sparkle and shine, and branches filled with things (hotel key cards, backstage passes, boutonnieres, shells, you name it), that mark special moments. I always sound like a little kid when I am decorating, saying ' oooh, this one is my favorite' to practically every one that I unwrap.lol

I love all of ours. We put very few ornaments on the tree so all of them are pretty special. My sister gets us a NYC themed one each year from somewhere in her neighborhood. My mother gets us a dated Lenox one each year as well and then we have some from vacations, some Maryland themed ones (crabs mostly) since MH is from MD.
Painted reindeer from when I was little. I think they're from Hallmark from the early '80s. All 8 reindeer are there. When I was little, deciding how to put them on was my very favorite part (do I pair them up with a santa ornament? put them in order of the song? let them spread out and meet new friends? lol) Mom was sweet enough to give them to me a few years ago for my tree.
Ah, here we go. eBay has everything (Mine are much cleaner than Comet here. Obviously Comet's previous owner didn't cherish him as much as I did )
Peach, my mom did 2 trees like that when I was little. The adult one with white lights was in the formal LR with the bay window and was visible from the street. The family one with the craft ornaments and colored lights was in the family room at the back of the house.
I got a few ornaments last year for A's first christmas (only one from me. he got several as gifts!). But my favorite is the one I'm doing each year. I get a photo frame ornament with the year on it, and put our holiday photo from that year. It's fun to see how we change year to year. I started that last year.
I have a lot of ornaments. A lot. Like I do 3 trees and don't scratch the surface of my troves of ornaments.
My favorite in no particular order:
A vintage plastic reindeer circa 1946. It was on my dad's family's tree. They were given to him when he got married and was broke. My father had 4- he gave one to my sister when she got married and one to my uncle who grew up with them. When I asked for one, all he had left was a 3 legged one than had been broken. It kind of speak volumes to my pecking order in the family.
Anything DS did in preschool and kindie, for some reason I have many silver glitter Stars of David, fingerprint reindeer and popsicle stick framed pictures.
The ornaments from vacations and trips. I have everything from a phallic Washington Monument to tiny Hawaiian shirts. My niece and DS have added to this with their trips which is cool.
The Waterford crystal ornaments we collected pre-baby that now live on the dining room tree now that baby is a grown and hairy faced man. I always hang his sterling Baby's First Christmas ornament on that tree as well. It's the one ornament I never thought I'd own.
My Barbies. Sure they're cheesy Hallmarks, but they make me smile and this is meant to be the last year. My BFF from childhood hangs on the tree in my office with glitter and magenta lights.
I have several favorite ornaments that have stories and meaning but I have one that is my FAVORITE. I made it when I was 4 at preschool out of salt dough, its a green cookie cutter christmas tree with red "ornaments" on it and has green curling ribbon to hang it. T cracked it two christmases ago and I lost it. Bawling blabbering mess. It has since been superglued back together.

OMGosh! My mother has this whole set too! One day my sister and I will probably have to fight over who gets them.
My favorite is also a set from my childhood, the 4 main characters from the Wizard of Oz.
