When we were down at my parents for Thanksgiving, my brother was watching an all day marathon of ghost hunters.
Now, I'm not so much a believer in them hearing voices because almost every sound can be turned into words and if you talk about it enough, you can get someone to believe they heard a voice.
But those devices they use that detect vibrations and such; I don't know how to feel about it all. On one hand, I want to believe it but on the other, who is say that they didn't vibrate it and cut those parts out? That would make it look like a ghost was actually responding.
We were watching the Hammond Castle one and they put the device on the roped off bed. The floors were stone, so they wouldn't vibrate.
They asked;
"Is so and so Hammond here?" - it lit up
"Is this so and so Hammond's wife?" - it lit up
"Do you need help? Is there a specific reason you are here?" - no lights.
"Are you bored?" - tons of lights
"So you're bored and just looking for entertainment?" - tons and tons of lights.
It's this type of stuff that makes me half believe in it but the other half of me says "they just edit this stuff to look like it".

Yeah I dunno. I am sure that they do edit it for dramatic effect. I do have kind of a cool story regarding all that stuff though...MIL is really into that show, so for her 50th birthday, we bought her all that same technology that they use on the show, and took her ghost hunting. Then, the next time we were at their house (which is really old and supposedly haunted), we were playing with all of that stuff and it all starts lighting up and getting static. MIL got the most activity in the corner of the room where she had just set up all of her mom's china that she had inherited, so she takes the light-up thing and asks if anyone is there. It immediately lights up. She asks if the person was the ghost of one of the people who had died there in the house's history...no lights. She then asks, ".....is this Mom?" and the thing fully lights up three or four times. MIL asks if she is alone, no lights. She asks if Dad was there too, and it lights up three or four times again. MIL immediately starts crying and we all got goosebumps. It might have all been a coincidence but it really was weird...I would believe that they really do find real things on the show.
I just find it so fascinating. I want to believe but I have such a hard time. I don't personally want to know if this is real, up close and all. But on shows and to others, sure!
Someone on the board does this and has all the equipment, and I'm sure she could answer questions.
It's not me you're talking about, but I used to do it. I only went to a few sites, but it's creepy as hell. I will tell you my honest opinion: hauntings and ghosts are real, but more rare than most people believe. There were a few things that I saw (on the equipment) that I still can't explain.

I believe in it, to an extent. I used to have some really freaky stuff happen but I've shut myself off to openly believing about it because I'm too much of a wimp to want to experience anything.
I think you're right though, it doesn't happen nearly as much as people say. But I think in old old places it might.
This Castle, the Hammond dude, was a ghost hunter and I guess spent his whole life trying to prove that ghosts and spirits were real.
