Could one have been a gift card? Or maybe they were splitting the purchase with other people? I've also had people buy some for them and some as a gift (for work) so they asked me to split up the charges.
Huh? I've split purchases for various reasons. I don't understand what's so annoying about that. I'd much rather get in line behind someone who simply wants to split a purchase between cards as opposed to someone who has 50 coupons or wants the store to price match everything down to the lettuce.
Yep, I feel bad for them. I assume they dont have $10 to their name and have almost maxed out two different cards.
They also often stand there saying "please go through" while the machine is "thinking"
I dont judge. I do assume
All of this. If I need to split it up on two cards for a legitimate reason, I always do deprecate transactions. I don't judge but I do feel bad. I've definitively be there at one time.

no judging here - i have done it myself for various reasons - including not having enough money to my name to pay for it on one, etc... sometimes times are tough.... or, like others have explained, sometimes there are other reasons to do it.
No. I was once behind someone in a grocery store who kept trying credit card after credit card and they kept getting declined. He was so embarrassed and the person behind me starting getting all huffy and being a dick. I turned around and told him to relax and chill out and to stop being a dick. Seriously? Someone can't pay for their food and you need to be a dick about it?
I do it on the regular since i like my daycare's food and my family's food to be on different cards for ease at tax time. I wonder if people judge me between that and the TONS of coupons I use in the transaction.
The only people I judge are the ones who wait to whip out their wallet until after they are given the total. Like they didn't know what was coming? Have that card ready.

I split orders when I am buying stuff for my mom (she ALWAYS needs stuff picked up, so she got a Target card she pays with my name on it). So I pay my stuff with my card, her stuff with her card. I don't see the big deal.
I never split it between credit cards..but I judge less than when a card is decilned..but things happen. People loose jobs, and make silly decisions. I am sure I was judged when our card was declined due to fraudulent activity. When I returned home, I was thankful that it was declined and caught by the cc company. So I try to give the benefit of the doubt.
for the man who was tryin to pay for groceries with declining cards, I wish I was there. I hope I would have paid for his groceries just to pay it forwrd!

No. But I do it often. I have a Mastercard linked to my Paypal account. We also have an account with a local credit union where we deposit checks that are gifts or whatever. Splitting payment has absolutely nothing to do with affording something. It's just where my money happens to be at any given time.

This is totally me sometimes, but in my defense it's usually only when I am distracted by dealing with an unruly toddler in the shopping cart.
I neither judge nor assume when someone uses a combo of cards to pay.

I judge people who write checks. I really judge people who wait to fill out the check until they get the total, and then have to balance their checkbook before ripping it out. Gah.
This board never fails to come up with the most ridiculous things to judge people on. Not only do i not judge people splitting their bill on different cards, I don't notice. I have enough other things to worry about than the CC habits of strangers.
Why do people seek out things to judge about others?
Stanford: Before I tell you, you have to promise not to judge. Carrie: Do I judge? Stanford: We all judge. That's our hobby. Some people do arts and crafts; we judge.

I certainly do my fair share of judging, but it's not for some of the petty things I have seen on these boards. Why does it matter how they pay? If they aren't using any of your money, wasting more than about 20 seconds of your time, or affecting you in any other way then who cares?

Because for some reason the Schadenfreude associated with believing someone else is making bad financial decisions (or at least ones that are worse than your own) is particularly delicious to this crowd.
No. The other night at dinner, my husband and I split the bill with our Amexes for small business Saturday so we could each get a credit. We kidded that we should have left our rings at home and pretended that we are on a date or something. When the waitress came back, she called us by our names. We have different last names so we then wondered if she thought we were having an affair.

As a cashier I don't judge this. I don't even judge when something is declined. There are so many reasons why it could be happening that are not worth judging.
