Hi! I'm a new poster but a long time lurker. My husband is in the army and re-enlisted to re-class. He goes to school at the end of December and just received orders to Fort Richardson for after he graduates. Any advice on PCSing and what to expect once we get to Alaska.

One of my friends from HS just left Richardson. From what I understand you either love it or hate it. I can get more info from her if you'd like. I believe they lived on post and they had two little boys. Their house was nice in a cute neighborhood.
Thanks ladies! Right now we are in El Paso and I hate it. I'm originally from central Texas so I miss all the trees and outdoorsy stuff. If anyone has more info about how the drive to Alaska was or how the housing lists are there I would love to hear!

I have no help, but I loved Anchorage when I visited. H was born there although moved when he was young, although he's gone back to visit family. I'm not sure I could handle the lack of sun, but in the summer, it's a beautiful place. Lots of outdoors stuff to do.
Thank you so much for the info! Our report date is May 20, 2013. It is just the two of us, no kids yet. I'm hoping to have the paper orders soon so we can submit them to the housing office to get on the wait list already. We have two vehicles and were planning to trailer my car behind my husband's truck. Is that doable?
88mangoes: You are such a big help! I am definitely starting to get exciting! I just starting researching everything yesterday and will PM you if I think of anything else. Thank you!

Another Ft Rich girl here! What unit is he assigned to and what is his MOS? This will GREATLY effect how much you like it here from the standpoint of his work and time spent with you/family.
As for Alaska itself, you will either love it or hate it, as others said. I hate it, but I HATE being cold, I love to be outside in the sun in a tee shirt and shorts, so this is not a great place for me most of the year. It is however one of the most beautiful places you could be, the scenery is breathtaking. If you has less adversity to cold then I do then there is tons of fun stuff to do outside even in the winter. Plus, its pretty cool to say you have lived in Alaska!
Welcome, and let me know if you have any more questions!
