I've never done live greenery. It's hard to find around here, actually.
I did find some; a 9 foot garland is $15. I'd need 2 of them to drape around my front door, so it'd be $30 to frame my door. That's a decent price, right?
Any tips on how you hang it? It's way too cold here to do command hooks. Staple gun? Our moulding is nothing special and dinged up anyway...
The biggest thing to look out for is freshness. I ordered some online one year from a family farm MI that doesn't cut until you order, and it lasted 5 weeks outside before it browned noticeably enough that I needed to take it down. (Temps are normally in the 40s here.) I've bought stuff from HD/Lowe's that was probably cut at freaking Halloween, it lasted such a short time. The greenery from the farm was expensive, maybe $50 for a rope, but it lasted so long it was worth it IMO. Just make sure whatever you're buying is as fresh as can be.
When we can't do command hooks, we tap in a small nail and use zip ties or big twist ties to secure it.
I went to the local nursery on Saturday and it was $0.50 per foot of white pine and $2.25 per foot of cedar. The cedar is much more full so that's the one I went with.
It's all about the freshness. It's not really "live" once it's cut.
Prices can be all over the place depending on what you buy. White pine is fine for outdoor applications. I use small eye hooks (A small loop with a screw back) and paddle wire but zip ties sound awesome.
I usually buy a mixed garland to trim my chandeliers- last year it was about $3.50 a yd. I'm cheap, I "harvest" a lot from my yard for my mantle and centerpieces. I have a trio of gold mop cypress that'll be getting a trim real soon. And I collect pine cones, too. Last yeat I sprayed my azalea cuttings gold and tossed them into the mix too. Very effective.
