I have a nook myself but am looking at getting my MIL an e-reader and the only one that seems to be in my price range is a Sony Reader Pocket Edition Silver PRS-300SC. I think it might be a refurb but am waiting to hear from the company selling it for sure. Do any of you have this and able to give me reviews on it? I don't want to get her something terrible. My cousin has the regular sony e-reader and loves it. Thanks!
What is your price range? Amazon has a very basic Kindle for $79 (I think I saw it on Cyber Monday deals for $69-sale might still be going) nothing fancy, no keyboard/color/internet access (except for downloading purposes) but it does the trick.
I've heard the Sony ones are fine, although I don't have any experience. The only issue might be the learning curve. I think she would HAVE to hook it up to her computer and load books that way. (Format wouldn't be an issue - unless she wants to buy e-books from Amazon.) Nooks and Kindles are a little more user-friendly with the ability to downloan directly to the device with one click. If she's good with computers it might be fine.
I've heard really good things about the Sony reader, though I haven't used one myself. I agree with msmerymac about the potential learning curve, though-- if USB file management is likely to be a challenge, it's probably not going to be the best choice for her.
They're usually a little more expensive than the Nooks and Kindles, and that is a really low price. So I would just make sure that you trust the seller and that some sort of a warranty comes with it.
