I can't imagine that he will buy gifts for DH and I, but I think he may buy for our kids (separately from her) so Iwant to make sure that we find something for them. The past few years SIL has bought for our kids, but the adults haven't exchanged.
Background. Both make decent money living in DC area. Early 30s. Have both been living separately, moving in together after the first of the year. SIL is a clotheshorse (not going to touch that for her) and likes make-up, is a staunch Republican, likes wine. Her BF is a nice guy, a runner, loves to cook. They both like going to concerts, but he is really "into" music. And that's about it lol!
DH and I were trying to think of her apartment, but they have everything and I can't think of anything that would be a cool addition. Then we were trying to think of something personalized, but thought that might be too wedding-y.
I think this is a time for GCs, since you don't really know their tastes per se. I would probably go with GC to Sephora or Nordstrom for her, GC to Williams Sonoma for him. Either $25 each plus a small item from each store (mini nail polish sampler, food item from WS), or if you just want to do GCs. $30 - $40 each.

I think it would be nice to show you thought about it. Maybe something related to a hobby? If he likes to run, a gc for runners world or running room? (Those are Canadian stores only, maybe?) Or if he has other hobbies? Or if he likes music, itunes gc? Maybe add some black socks so there is something to open.

Can you make a nice gift basket with several bottles of wine? Maybe add a few of the "accessories" like a foil cutter, the wine glass tags/charm identifier things, maybe a little book about wines, etc.

Will they have to take the gifts back on a plane? If not, go to sur la table or crate and barrel and do a basket of themed stuff. Like creme brûlée mix and ramekins, bloody Mary mix and glasses, or a cheese board and knives.
