Poor guy started a cold a couple days ago and now he has croup. He was coughing a bit, but all of a sudden it hit him like a ton of bricks. Poor guy was coughing and crying so much that he was puking. In between the coughing and crying he would grab his throat and scream ow. I was trying so hard not to cry with him. I was going to try and let it run it's course, but he started having problems breathing even when not coughing and it was pretty labored and wheezing. He's newly diagnosed with asthma, so anything to do with his breathing terrifies me. He was so upset he couldn't even get a breath in between coughs. So we packed up the kids and drove to the closest ER 35 or so minutes away.
He did pretty good, considering. Better than the pediatrician's office actually! He got an oral steroid, 2 breathing treatments, and sent home with a steroid rx and an antibiotic rx because he also apparently has an ear infection. Just getting ready to TRY and get some sleep. He fell asleep about 45 minutes ago and coughed a bit, but seems to be sleeping now (knock on wood). Not a chance in hell either were sleeping at the hospital. It's so scary to have to take him to the ER for the first time! I'm a wuss when it comes to parenting, I swear.
Had to get pics of the first ER visit for the baby books!
And Fiona had to tag along and she was WIDE awake the entire time from the time we left 12:30-when we left the hospital around 4-something. She had a pretty good time lol. My fingers are crossed that there's the slightest chance she will avoid Mr. Contagious. When he's pretty much slobbered on every toy in the house I'm doubtful. He said at her age she's actually less likely to get it though.
Hope Linus feels better soon! J has asthma and we had a few late night runs to the ER for breathing issues and it's scary. Is he on Singulair yet?
ETA: I laughed at the "saved for baby book pic" because I still have pics from J's hospital visits....here was her first one where she totally looks like a boy still...
Poor Linus! DD has had a cough for a few weeks related to a cold. She coughs so hard sometimes and it's awful! I can't imagine her not being able to catch her breath, how scary! Hope he feels better soon! And Fiona is too adorable, hope she doesn't get it!

Thanks ladies. He's doing a lot better after the steroids. He said it should help the inflammation a ton. He slept pretty well last night and is pretty nasty sounding today, but normal mild croup sounding, not struggling to breathe kind of sick!
Ouiser- he's not on singulair. Right now we"re just doing an albuterol inhaler as needed. It was just last week at his 18 month appt, so we didn't even have it yet! It was sent to the wrong pharmacy twice, etc. so I hadn't even used it on him. It seems worse at night when he's running around like a maniac so she said to use it as needed and we'll reevaluate how much we're needing to use it in a couple months.
Promise me you will ask his pedi if he's old enough for Singulair next time you see him/her. It made so much of a difference it was amazing. The patent is up too, so a generic should be available. I paid every cent of her $60 a mo. Rx gladly though.

Thank you! I hadn't even thought of it! I have asthma but am fine with just my rescue inhaler so it didn't cross my mind. I take fiona for her 9 month so I'll ask her then.

Poor sweet Linus!! I am glad he's starting to feel a little better with the medicine in him. That sounds so scary! You've had a rough few weeks and a few scares, biblio, hopefully this is the end of it for you, and you can all feel better and get some rest soon! Hugs!
