Has anyone dealt with piriformis syndrome?
I started couch to 5k in February, I was having problems with shin splints in my left leg. I went back to the running store and got fitted for a new pair of shoes. Within 2 weeks of running with the new shoes the leg pain went away. I went on to finish the program and slowly started adding more mileage to my runs.
I have been consistently running 3 days a week (3 miles, 4-5 miles, 5-6 miles). About a month and a half ago I started getting some pain in my butt. I finished my runs and the pain went away. I continued to get the pain every time I ran but it would go away after I was done running. From everything I have read it seems to be my piriformis muscle.
After about a week and a half the pain went away and I was able to run with no problems. Then about a week ago the pain started coming back. I set out this past Wednesday for my 6 mile run and it went great until mile 5. At that point I started to get some soreness in my butt so I slowed my pace down a bit. At about mile 5.5 I got a sharp pain that shot all the way down my leg to my toes. I had to completely stop running to catch my breath. I decided to walk from that point and I got the sharp pain again. I continued to walk back to my car. The pain eventually went away and was just sore.
I am been doing lots of stretching, massaging and using ice. I have not ran since Wednesday because I am afraid of it happening again.
Has anyone dealt with this? Or know why it started happening even though I haven't really changed anything?
