Omg, yes. My h has special chicken frying steaks sitting in the freezer and if I dare use one for fajitas or something, he shits bricks. Ok. No, he doesn't, it's more like " but we could have had chicken fried steak and gravy!"
I will say that he did it with venison a couple of times, and that was pretty good. I wasn't a huge beef fan as a kid unless it was on a fast food hamburger or in a hot dog.
Yeah, we use venison. And when I say "special steaks", I mean they're actually labeled " round steak for CFS" on the package. He's serious about his chicken fried steak.
Yes. It's served in tons of country/home cooking restaurants around me (GA). I didn't know it was a Texas thing and thought it was just a Southern thing.
I love it but rarely eat it because I have to think it's about the most unhealthy thing a person can eat, especially since I like it covered with white gravy.
It can be hit or miss. I didn't know it was TX since my mom made it when we lived in CA when I was younger. But I have had it here from time to time. Some of the local independant restaurants make a killer chicken fried steak.
Nope, CFS requires country gravy, no brown gravy. And yes to Sonic Cherry Limeades but I am not a huge fan of Whataburger. The fries are too salty. THough their country gravy is really tasty. And Kolaches, YUM! We have some great food down here for sure.
Good CFS is epic awesome, bad CFS is the worst thing you'll ever eat.
I'm a fan, but I don't think it's a TX thing. I think it's just Southern in general. But hell, if my state can take credit for a good thing, I'm all for it.
This recipe? AMAZING. It makes a huge mess in the kitchen but is SO worth it. DH and I make it once a year because it's so messy. And unhealthy. The latter is an afterthought. lol
