I personally like white applicances. We updated our appliances about 2 years ago and got white. We have white cabinets, glass subway tile backsplash and tan quartz counters. I also got a white porcelain sink instead of stainless - I think they look cheap. I say go with what you like!
I saw lots of white appliances. They may not be as modern looking, but you are the one living there. Buy whatever you life.
Our stainless steel appliances are so annoying. I can't get them clean looking. They are either covered in fingerprints, dog nose marks, or streaks from me trying to clean them.
They can be, but look for sales. We got a dishwasher and a fridge from sears last President's day for a huge discount (we did have to open a sears charge, but it was another 5% off on top of a 15% sale). Then I also stalked prices online and when our fridge went even lower, they credited the difference.
Our fridge was $1800, but it's a french door SS and is thinner than normal models, only 33" wide. We also got a SS dishwasher for around $600. These were both kenmore elite models.
ETA: I know someone was talking about sears points yesterday and I just wanted to say, we got so many points for our appliance purchases that we were able to get DH a really nice grill for less than half price in the spring. DH is a kenmore/craftsman fan though.
I prefer white appliances. Do you have a Sears Outlet near you? We got a side by side that was normally $1500 for $450 because it had a scratch on the side.
The side with the scratch was against a wall in our kitchen, so it was perfect.
The fancy SSappliances w/bells and whilstles tend to break (e.g., refrigerators, W/D). And they are not cheap to fix. I had a refrigerator repairman replace the fan in our old white fridge - he said the expensive SS appliances are so prone to breaking. My boss chucked her fancy W/D for $350 white models and is so much happier.
Not saying all SS is bad, just be sure to do your research and make sure you're getting good value for your dollar. We have a SS dishwasher - it works well and was the same price as other finishes.
I second the sears Outlet. I got an $800 washing machine for $320 because it has a big scratch on the side. My basement is 100 years old, so I REALLY don't care what the washer looks like.
There isn't much of a price difference between SS/white/black in the models we looked at. There is a huge price difference though between your basic top freezer, single door fridge vs side by side vs bottom freezer drawers, etc. Even if it's not on the floor, if you ask just about any appliance comes in all 3 finishes.
We bought a fridge just 2 years ago for about $400 but it was a very basic model, old school top freezer type. So if you're okay with that, cheap appliances can still be found.
Do you have a scratch and dent nearby? We have one in our area that sells GE products, they come with the regular GE warranty and most of them have no visible scratches or dents. My MIL bought a really nice higher end gas range there that was originally $3k for $1200. I'm sure there are similar stores in other areas.
Also, ditto pp, with more modern and advanced appliances you will have more issues. It used to be that all appliances ran on a motor that was activated using knobs. Now most appliances are advanced electronics that use digital technology. There are some basic stainless steel appliances out there and I tend to sway towards those.
Frigidaire has a package of kitchen appliances if you do a search for "frigidaire appliance package"... It includes the microwave, fridge, range/stove, and dishwasher. We had one at our old house and they were good appliances, just very basic.

Barefoot, there is a sears outlet at northlake. I actually like how my white appliances look like my white cabinets. I don't see the draw to stainless....especially with kids or white cabinets.

I'm not a big fan of stainless. A lot of the ones we looked at had an additional fee for stainless. We have a black fridge and a black and white stove. The stove has a retro feel to it, but I like that about it. I bought our fridge for $850. It was originally $1800, but it has a tiny dent on the side. It's next to the stove, so you can't even see it. I think the stove was around $400. I cook with a lot of cast iron, so we decided to go with the coil type instead of the glass top which is a lot cheaper.
I also bought gift cards to pay for them at Giant Eagle for the fuel rewards.
I've had every color & prefer white. I've replaced 2 of my kitchen appliances w/in the past 2yrs with higher end brands in white. I'm really over SS. There are lots of sales & definitely comparison shop. Pick your wants & go from there. And the PP poster is right a lot of (often the pricier ones) brands are not as reliable & much more costly to repair. Definitely look at the reviews online & ask the sales people. I've had them steer me away from certain brands (like a KA dishwasher) because they've had them frequently returned. Ive bought at least 16 appliances so far in all my houses. I will buy many more having rentals i'm sure . Oh & Sears (Kenmore) appliances are made by other manufactures (like GE), just to Sears Specs. i didnt know that until a couple years ago. Good luck!
I prefer white appliances too. I think they have a bright, clean look. It's not like white is an easily dated color like avocado.
When we were looking for a stove and fridge, there was only a difference of $100-150 between white and stainless steel, but we were looking in just above the least expensive price range.
You should check consumer reports for reviews and then do your shopping. I just bought a new house and the oven/range didn't work so I knew I needed to replace it (I knew that from the first time I looked at the house).
I was able to buy a range and matching microwave oven at home depot with the black friday sales (but two weeks prior) for a total of $1000. I probably saved $400 on those two items.
Then I got a doorbuster french door fridge from sears on black friday for $999. I saw the SAME fridge at sears this week for $1700.
I have also heard that President's day is a good time for appliance sales.
