"Poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids."
Yikes...have fun mitigating that one.
THIS IS NOT A SLIP UP!!!!!!!!!
Right? To put that comment in perspective, Andrew Clark is the Trump campaign's rapid response director (or some such.)
THIS IS WHY WE NEED TO LOOK AT OTHER CANDIDATES INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON BIDEN AS "THE ONE WHO CAN BEAT TRUMP." The Trump campaign will wipe the floor with his "gaffes" and "misquotes" and "mistakes" (that aren't gaffes, misquotes or mistakes but comments from another old white guy raised in an age of white patriarchy who isn't doing the work to fix his privilege.)
Thursday was not the first time Biden’s comments on race have prompted scrutiny.
In February 2007, on the day he launched his bid for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, Biden found himself defending comments made a week earlier in an interview with the New York Observer about then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).
A guide to the 24 Democratic contenders who want to face Trump
In the interview, he called Obama “the first mainstream African American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.”
Biden issued a statement that day, saying: “I deeply regret any offense my remark in the New York Observer might have caused anyone. That was not my intent and I expressed that to Sen. Obama.”
And we all know the color of the "good guy with a gun" because if he wasn't white he wouldn't be alive. I'll eat my hat, with hot sauce, if he was any color other than very light on skin color scale.
A friend of mine in Ohio says there was also an incident in Toledo where someone was stopped.
I vacillate between, I can’t believe qualified, sane people stayed part of this horrid administration so long and holy fuck, don’t go. I can’t imagine the conflict these life-long government folks feel.
What shit zombie will orangeturdgibbon nominate now. Terrifying.
Don’t quote, will delete. ***************************
One of my son-in-law's possible locations when he was active (he ended up in Misawa) was DC. His mother was at the Pentagon for 20+ years and he would have ended up there at some point as well. Right now I'm thanking our lucky stars that he's NOT stationed there and doesn't have to put up with this shitgibbon administration up-close. Same for my mother-in-law retiring from the USDA and my son-in-law's mother retiring years ago and moving across the country. (Though my MIL is a Trump supporter and would likely not be as horrified. Although I would hope that proximity to the administration would wake her sorry ass up regarding this administration instead of her being able to admire it from far away via Fox and Rush or whomever is the latest talking head.)
While I'm sorry he's headed to Guam I'm certainly happier to see him there than in DC right now.
Holy shit, do I feel lucky. Two sets of in-laws and nobody's tried to kill me yet. They even *LIKED* me and were friendly and respectful toward me. That house and those people are absolutely a no-fly zone. She's lucky to be alive and they're lucky to not be in jail.
He was seizing and had blood coming out of his ears. This is fucked up at so many levels it's inconceivable. He suffered not only a temporal lobe fracture but TBI and a brain bleed . One of my grands' friends (my "daughter by another mother") has a seizure disorder, as does my ex. I'm going to use friend as a frame of reference for a moment since they're of an age and she had a similar injury. She fell and hit her head on pavement during a seizure when she was this boy's age. She was bleeding from her ear. Two weeks later she had a stroke as a result of that particular incident. She lost the use of her entire left side for a time, and it was awful for her to deal with. Bullying and pity and looks from schoolmates because of it made things far worse. My ex started having seizures at 25 due to head trauma. He still has them. He has no short-term memory and other issues due to TBI, getting worse as he ages. He literally has to write *everything* down or tell his wife, or he won't remember what he's supposed to do or where he's supposed to be or the conversation he had moments before. He's only 55 and has been unable to work for years. Decades, actually.
This isn't a kid having seizures he's grown into and will grow out of as he progresses through puberty. This is a kid who's sustained serious head trauma and a TBI as a result. While they don't know the permanent effects, they will be lifelong. This CHILD will never be the same.
This isn't merely horrific. This is tragic for the boy in that it will affect him forever and will do so in unimaginable ways. I just can't get over the senselessness and this SOB's blasé lack of care or concern. I'm at "I hope he rots" right now.
You're assuming that the world as we know it is still around in 20 years. Dollars to donuts you'll move before then, just due to climate to change.
Truth. I've been telling people that my plan is to retire someplace warm; so I plan to stay in my current house (in Oregon) until I die. It was supposed to be a joke, but lately it seems like Oregon is actually gonna be someplace beastly hot even before I reach my planned early retirement. Shoulda bought a retirement home in Vancouver before home prices there went through the roof.
I've been trying to get my husband to buy a place in Cle Elum or points north in the hills near a lake where we can have a little cabin when the Cascadia Induction quake hits and our house is swallowed by the Pacific Ocean and North America plate (or whatever plate is going to swallow us up.) Yeah, this is a true thing. These thoughts have crossed my mind more than once.
His mom's place is in Florida. I'm not sure it'll be worth snowbirding in the next ten years and I'm sure not spending summers down there.
He's in Medford this week. It's freaking 95 there today!
I've been listening to Ally Henny and her FB has been popping up more and more on my timeline over the past months. I can spend hours going down her rabbit hole. She's become my second favorite FB destination, after my first love Connie Schultz. I actually sent her money. ME! Divesting myself of funds to someone on Facebook who does podcasts and all that electronical internet stuff that young folks do! (This election campaign and current administration are going to make me go broke. lol.) But if you haven't listened to her podcasts (Combing the Roots) I highly recommend.
RELEASED ON HIS OWN RECOGNIZANCE? They were seeking $100K bail, which I think was too freaking low for the incident and his history, but the judge RELEASED HIM ROR??? Get that white-male-privilege judge out of there.
And in the gun assault, he was sentenced to ten years probation, ALL OF WHICH WERE SUSPENDED. He just walked up to a car, brandished a gun and threatened to kill them. WHAT THE FUCK?
I have no words for the rage this has incited as you can tell.
I obviously didn't read the whole thing, so it's on me to admit it and apologize. I've been seeing a lot of Beto Needs To Run with folks not acknowledging the other race out there, and it was a kick-start response to the opening sentence. I deserve to be called out for laziness and sloppiness. Having two strong Dems compete head-to-head would be a good match and something folks need to see, actually. I need to get off my high-horse and 2016 reactionary animus against the men running.
Thanks. And I’m sorry to snap. I am really on edge right now with the state of affairs in this country.
Frankly I’m feeling like none of the candidates are up for the challenges ahead of us.
I’m writing this from my corner taco stand waiting to pick up my dinner and lamenting what could have been.
No apologies are necessary but they are appreciated. I'm in the same boat, obviously, as you can tell by my reflexive response to Beto Needs to Run for Senate. I'm grateful for the acknowledgement and mutual apology rather than the earned "Jeez, you're an effing maroon."
I'm doing my hardest to not respond (again) to some guy on a Hillary page who's insistent that Hillary's arrogance and hubris cost her the election. (Edited out the rage that I posted here so I didn't go there again.)
Except that MJ Hegar is running and I'd hate to see a mediocre (well, better than many but still) upstage a woman with a story. Again.
Did you even read my post?
ETA I don't care if you prefer MJ Hegar. THat's fine. She's awesome! But admonishing me like I forgot her, when I clearly did not, and then dismissing my desire for someone to talk about white supremacism because feminism is weird and offensive. So I am giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming you didn't read what I said.

Now more than ever, it is Beto's time to run for the senate. I would not have been happy if Beto swooped in to steal the Dem nom about from MJ Hegar a week ago. But looking at her remarks on the shooting versus Beto, I have to say, he needs to do this. He's been so damn good on this in every interview, and I think there is a unique opportunity here for him to really hold the GOP accountable for their racism coddling of white supremacists that could have important ramifications nationwide.
Except that MJ Hegar is running and I'd hate to see a mediocre (well, better than many but still) upstage a woman with a story. Again.
Holy crap eclaires I'm of the "I'll pay the $460K for a place that big on a lot that size because after I sell my place in HCOL that's "1/3 the size with bedrooms that will fit a twin bed and a dresser that's on a postage stamp size lot which barely fits shrubbery and I can touch my back fence from my deck and I'll STILL have $200K to update and remodel..." I might just retire to Knoxville.
The brickwork out front is...interesting.
And if it came down to it, I'd poop in a tub. Or a sink. (a la Bridesmaids) Bushes... Pretty much anywhere it'll flush, decompose or wash away is better than clenching while unclenchable. @angryharpy wambam
We used to live in a 720 sq ft home with two adults and two kids. One bathroom.
Do I win a prize?
There is a reason we moved. For my own mental health, I needed an office (I WFH) where I could shut the door and be away from everyone. Maybe not necessary but we were literally on top of each other in our old house.
I dunno. Does 3 in a 720 beat 6 (plus any vagrant the ex put up) in 800? lol.
At one point the darling dear had his friend (my friend's ex-POS-boyfriend; dude took a train from CA to WA and *walked* 30 miles to show up on our doorstep after she kicked him out more than a year after we'd moved away) in a camper in the side yard, a teen couple sleeping in the bottom bunk, another couple and another teen sleeping in the front room... when I came home from work one night. The teens and others left after a couple days of us fighting and me yelling and being a shit in general (I was working and he stayed home and would let them come while I was gone) but POS didn't/wouldn't until I pushed him too far, and there's a reason there's an ex-in front of that particular husband. I was "that bitch" for a very long time.
When XH and I bought our first house (after he got his disability settlement) it was a 3/1 and less than 1,000 s.f. It worked for our family of 6, even with the kids in school and me working and all of us needing to get dressed at the same time. It was on septic rather than sewer, too. It's something I'd *love* to be living in right now.
We are now in a 2,300 s.f. 4/2.5 for a family of 4. We never use the front room or dining room (well, maybe 3x per year) and the extra bedroom is a TV room we really don't need. I hate cleaning it and I know we'll have mobility issue when we're older so the next (and last) house we'll be buying will be a one-level and no more than 1,800 s.f. 3/2 because two toilets are a necessity. Even with two teens here I feel like we're all floating in our own spaces and we never see each other because of it. Nobody needs all this space; we just *want* it. It's ridiculous. But with one weekend to buy (our house in Ohio sold and closed in a matter of weeks) and the housing market selling like crazy (every house he wanted to look at was sold before he could see it) it was between a new build (this one) and one that needed updating (which I wish he'd gotten because I like the town and it was a one-level and would have made a great retirement home) and he didn't want to update the seriously in need older home and so here we are (to my regret; he bought while I was still back east working and selling our old home.)
When we were empty-nesters for a short period of time, I was looking at condos downtown with less than 1,000 s.f. and a single bedroom with an office type set-up and it was glorious imagining not having to drive anywhere and clean up huge barely used spaces and cuddle on the sofa with no interruptions.
I just got an invite to an election watch party on Facebook (primary ballots are due today for some local elections) by a group called Faith in Action (liberal and religious). The cover is of the Democratic party members/candidates who marched in one of our local parades. Front and center are me and granddaughter holding the O and the E in the word VOTE. Pretty fun to see that jump right off my screen. "Hey, I recognize that person holding the E." And the one holding the T, too...and then looking and seeing that yes, I'm hiding behind the O. lol.
I'm so sorry auroraloo Can you talk with an employment attorney to see if you have a case? (I have an outstanding referral if you're in Ohio, part. the Cleveland area.)
My son-in-law was separated from the Navy, and took a job his boss in the Navy recommended for him and strongly pushed his recommendation to the company as well. He took the job over several other opportunities because of his Navy boss (who did some programming work for the company in his free time.) The boss loved him, but last year passed the company down to his son. I'm guessing there were issues from the son because he went from being the guy they turned to and were training to be C-suite to "you're not cutting it and you need to go." He'd joined the Reserves so he could continue to serve (and earn his retirement) and now he's decided that going to deploy full-time is what he wants to do. A lot of the same benefits if he's full-time active duty, except they won't move the family to where he's going (overseas to what is probably a nice location. It's somewhere I'd like to vacation anyway.) When he goes back from deployment, he's looking to go to full-time reserves status. It's not quite the same panache as active duty but... At one point they were looking to take back P-3 pilots since they released a number of them, and he was seriously considering leaving his job but felt loyal to the company and his former (Navy) boss who had recommended it to him. So, no active duty since that window closed but at least he's back in the military which is what he wanted and where he felt the most comfortable. (He's a military brat who graduated from Annapolis so it's really all he ever knew until they cut the rug out from under him.)
At least he'll be making more than he'd been making at the company that let him go. And he and my daughter are enjoying a respite and time together until he has to leave. He'll be gone for at least a year, with no vacations for at least six months.
I was just about to come and post that his team tweeted headstones of people (McGrath and Garland)
There are so words for how awful and disgusting and evil Mitch McConnell is. He is scum.
WTF?!? He tweeted a headstone for MERRICK GARLAND? The Supreme Court nominee he blocked. Who remains a federal court judge but not SCOTUS because of the actions of the Senate under him (McConnell).
What a motherfucker. I do not say that lightly. What a heinous waste of human skeleton and tissue.
I posted an angry rant on FB about fuck the 2A and how much I want to ban all guns and I had so many comments about how if you remove 2A it’s only a matter of time before they come for 1A and other rights. It was terrifying how easily people deluded themselves and how scared they are of their guns being taken away. None seemed to understand that the frame that the constitution was written was so completely different than modern times
We need to tread real lightly with constitutional convention/ratifying the Constitution talk, though. Please don't scoff at this. The religious right WANTS a constitutional convention, because they want to modify 1A and add anti-abortion provisions and a whole host of other shit like removing birthright citizenship and banning same sex marriage. And with the current makeup of most statehouses (27 Republican governors, 24 Dem; 30 GOP-controlled statehouses vs 18 Dem), they'd be likely to get it. psmag.com/social-justice/how-conservatives-could-rewrite-the-constitution
This talk has been going around in evangelical circles, the Heritage Foundation and others for literally decades. They're very close to achieving it. And, much like it's the Dems who've ultimately gotten completely screwed on SCOTUS nominations when Harry Reid decided to use the nuclear option, minorities and women would get completely screwed in any debate where Trump's in the WH, Barr controls DOJ, McConnell's leading the Senate AND the majority of state legislatures are GOP-controlled.
That's not a fight we need to be calling for. Not right now.
They've been working this angle for four decades now. It's how we have so many firmly evangelical red legislatures and governors, the acolytes and followers, the "reformers" ad nauseum.
We haven't been nearly as prepared, nor for nearly as long. They're entrenched. We need to unseat and untrench them before we talk about completely upending our current laws. Because they're ready and able to take the reins and do exactly as you stated.
I liked Beto when he was running against Ted Cruz. Not a fan of him running for President. But at this moment in time, the fact that he is running for President gives him a larger platform, and I am thankful that he is running and that he's using it to advantage.
My mother in law is coming next week. My cruise is the week after.
The only sad thing, beyond the need to desperately clean my house, is that she won't get to meet George The Puppers since we'll be taking him to board the morning she arrives. At least we won't have to worry about him being an asshat since he has the run of the house; he sleeps in our room (and what used to be our bed, lol) which is where she and FIL will be staying. I know he'd be an absolute turd trying to get into the room or finding someone else in "his/our" bed. (This is why I wanted a sleeper sofa in the TV room, darling husband of mine. We won't be relegated to an air mattress, no matter how nice it may be, while they get the master bedroom.) The timing, believe it not, is completely coincidental. I didn't know she was coming until after I'd signed the papers.
At least every mass shooting they have listed. I don't see the Chicago shootings from this weekend, for example (two mass shootings referenced on another post, with 17 injured and 1 dead. The two women/gun violence protestors killed, either. But I guess "gang violence" doesn't count as "mass shootings"?)
It was a kick in the gut when I saw them all together and it registered with me how many times I had to continue scrolling down. I kept thinking "this is the end. It's got to be close to the end." Only to see that it was June or May or March...

The father of the baby also died, trying to protect mother and two-month-old baby. They leave behind the infant, a one-year-old and a six-year-old. They were at the Wal Mart buying party supplies for the six-year-old's birthday.
They'll find a new home soon enough, but it's at least a small step. I find it ironic that they don't want to mediate content but leave it to the government/politics/legal channels to regulate. You know, that place that's already too big and has too many regulations.
I woke up this morning and was so confused by the mentions of Dayton on my twitter feed mixed in with El Paso. It is unfathomable that I went to bed last night ranting about the horrific mass shooting our nation experienced yesterday and then to wake up to another one. Just seven days after there was one in California.
Being overlooked was the Walmart shooting in Mississippi from a disgruntled employee who was suspended for showing a knife at work. Two dead, two officers injured. July 30th. That's four mass shootings this week. 251 this year, as of August 4.
My congresswoman posted and commented about the need for gun control. The yahoos who are commenting back about "my gun hasn't killed anyone." and "He's not a Trump supporter. That's an MSM lie. He's Antifa. All mass shooters are registered Democrats." is mind-blowing.
I’m so done with these 2A assholes.
I'm hoping it's Russian trolls I'm engaging with but I'm more than sure we have our share of American good ol' boys who say this.
