It was excellent! Didn't really get ANY rain until we were leaving. I miscalculated when we'd need to catch BART to get to Richmond on time to transfer to our train and as a result, we sat on the platform getting cold and rained on for about 45 minutes.
Honestly, it was the most fun I've had in a long time. We wandered around Macy's, checked out the windows, rode the cable cars out to Ghiradelli Square for ice cream and hot chocolate and then WALKED back up Hyde almost all the way to Powell before we decided to catch a cable car the rest of the way back (I was worried we wouldn't make it to BART fast enough walking). FYI, train is DEF the way to go between here and there. So much less stress and it was $35 pp round trip. Cheaper than gas, tolls, and parking.
We ended up eating at John's Grill on Ellis. Excellent food and service.
Yeah, I think the train is better from there to here. Not so sure about here to there. Not a lot of good public transit in Sacto I think We always seem to need a car there.

Sacto light rail is pretty decent. Cheap and safe. But they don't cover the west side of the city at all, nor the airport or whatever they're calling the Kings' facility at this point. which is stupid, but whatever.
Not sure about the buses - I probably wouldn't, but I can't say for sure.
