I wonder what it says about me that I totally recognized your SN and didn't think you were a semi-lurker. Anyway
I have the Eureka Enviro Hard-Surface Floor Steamer and really like it. No chemicals, which was a big deal for me since I have two dogs and a baby. Re: sweeping- I haven't found anything that works better than a broom.
Do you have old hardwood or new sealed hardwood? If it's old, you don't want to do that, the water can get under and between the boards. It can also remove your finish. I only wash my hardwood floors 2x year.
I have the sweep n steam or whatever it's called. It's good and it works well, but it takes a while. I'll do small areas with it, but it's not my preferred method for cleaning my floors.
I sweep and/or dry swifter (depends on how anal I'm being) and then use a microfiber mop and spray with a mixture of water/vinegar/dawn. I just spray as I go and it takes me 10ish minutes (sweep and mop) to do 1000sqft. It's by far the quickest, easiest and best method I've found. I am a bit OCD about my floors, so here is what I do.
About twice a week I use the Bissell Sweeper, it's amazing, all of us at work have them at home and we have one at work because we love it so much. The I use the Bona mop, I used all the Bona cleaner up and now just use a water/vingegar/dawn/tea tree oil mixture. My floors look really good most of the time and it takes me about 20 mins to do all 1200 sq ft. I have two dogs and a kid and a backyard that floods every Dec-May.
Every few months I use a broom and the Eureka Enviro-steamer for a deep clean.
