What does everyone think of them? In living rooms or bedrooms, not kitchens or dining rooms.
I'm not really a fan of the way they look, but I have to have one one while sleeping. My house does not have any, and we're contemplating installing them rather than regular light fixtures in all the bedrooms and living and family rooms. Would this turn you off from a house? We're not selling, but I'm curious how others feel. I want the honest, brutal truth. ;D
I hope it wouldn't turn people off. We have them throughout the house. (well...had. Then uninstalled. Now in the process of installing new ones) I know they aren't exactly fashion forward, but I LOVE ceiling fans. We delay turning on the AC as long as possible and the only way that works is with a ceiling fan. And I wouldn't be able to sleep without a fan.
We have one in each bedroom and the living room. I wouldn't have it any other way honestly. 2 out of the 4 rooms have high ceilings so its nice to keep the air moving through the room.

We don't have a/c so they are vital. I love them honestly. There are a TON of hideous ones out there though. I like them without a light or with a lower-profile light usually.
They are a fact of life in the dead of summer Midwest. I wouldn't buy a house that didn't have them or at least have the boxes to have them easily installed. This whole ceiling fans are "out" "dated" and "ugly" has to be an internet thing. Some HGTV designer must've decided this and the blog world jumped it. ;P I don't know a single soul who would not want a fan IRL.
I think they're pretty standard in most areas. We definitely noticed them while house hunting recently but as a 'ooh, no fan - something we'll have to buy' thing.
We just moved a couple months ago and that's one of the first things we did. I honestly don't know how the people living here before us lived without them in their bedrooms. This is why I could never understand the whole bedroom chandelier thing, I need a ceiling fan to sleep.

I came in to pretty much say this exactly. We still have some rather ugly generic looking fans in my house, but they do the job and that's really important to me.
Most visitors don't really look up that much. My friend showed me her bedroom one time and then had to point out that the ceiling had a huge piece that had fallen down. I probably wouldn't have noticed that or if she had a ceiling fan.
This makes me feel more normal now. I just keep coming across all these photos of rooms with chandeliers and other light fixtures and wonder how people deal with it. My sinuses like/need air circulation.
Ceiling fans in the rooms were a big selling point for us. Texas is too hot to not have them in every bedroom, and all the non-food living spaces. Sure we have a/c, but a/c alone gets pricey when it's muggy and hotter than hell for days on end. Plus ceiling fans in our milder months means we can turn the a/c off completely.

I think they are very ugly, but I want them in every bedroom anyway. Also handy to have in the kitchen/dining room in case of burnt food mishaps, lol. But that only works if the ceilings are high enough.
We are house hunting and based on the listings we have seen, ceiling fans are considered a selling point. We will be adding them to every bedroom. Honestly we will probably get cheap ugly ones, too, since it is just a bedroom that very few people will ever see.

I think it's definitely one of those things where your average homeowner likes ceiling fans. We have one in our bedroom and I actually think it looks pretty nice. I'm partial to the look of 3 blade fans, and since we have low ceilings and a smallish bedroom, it moves plenty of air
There are nicer versions of this style of fan we could have bought, but the Lowe's one we got was a couple hundred dollars cheaper than anything similar we could find.
I'm dying to install them in bedrooms. We have no lighting in our bedrooms, we have to have lamps only in each room. I prefer a fan with a light over a lot of floor lamps. Floor lamps are ridiculous expensive for a nice one. The inexpensive ones blow, and neither help with air!
I know! Most of the houses we have considered have no ceiling lights in the bedrooms. I thought maybe we should wait, $$$ wise, to get overhead lights/fans installed, but honestly it would cost almost as much to buy a bunch of lamps. We are going to bite the bullet and just get them installed ASAP.
They're probably not the world's most stylish light but I just had 3 installed in bedrooms at the new house. I like that they move the air around; they also help us get by without turning the a/c on so soon.
95% of bedrooms around here have either a ceiling fan or a basic flush mount light; I'd much rather the ceiling fan.
We have 2 in our house and I really love both of them. I'd never liked them before. I really don't like them in low ceiling rooms. I can't explain it but it physically makes me uncomfortable.
1 is in our bedroom and it really helps - we have big windows and skylights and sometimes it just gets hot, even with the AC on. When the weather cooperates, I like to open the windows and turn the fan on rather than AC. The ceiling in that room slopes up to the roof so you get a light/bright airy feeling, the lowest point is 10'. The ceiling fan is probably at 12' high where it hangs. Our bed is high and even standing on the bed I can't reach the blades to clean them and I'm 5'5". I hate dragging a ladder up there to clean, with where our bed sits I can't position the ladder well. This fan has a light between each blade, they dim and I like that a lot too.
We also have a ceiling fan in our family room. That room slopes from a 10' ceiling on the West side to a 17' ceiling on the left. It has 2 big skylights, the fan hangs between the two. The ceiling is probably 15' where the fan hangs Being on the West side, this room can really get awfully hot. I like to open the door to the patio and turn the ceiling fan. This fan does not have a light and that's fine with me, I don't think it would look right.
It really is amazing the difference they make. We have a bonus room over our garage, huge room and I'd like to put one in there but it has a 9' ceiling and that is just too low for me.
I love ceiling fans. They are pretty much a necessity here, and it drives me crazy when designers on TV turn up their noses at them and yank them out.
If you have light fixtures that you are replacing, make sure to install the proper supports for the ceiling fans. The supports for light fixtures are not the same thing. We paid extra for overhead lights/ceiling fan wiring when we bought this house, but the builders made it seem like it was the whole package. It definitely wasn't the right support for ceiling fans.

This.
What is beyond my comprehension is why "people" judge ceiling fans as a whole based on the hideous specimens from the 80s and 90s.
Seriously, nobody chooses those anymore, so no, ceiling fans are not ugly. It's like saying jeans are ugly because you're looking at a pleated, acid washed pair.
I've noticed on the nest that people choose overly modern ones to (my theory) counteract the "dated-ness" they believe they have. I think you should choose whatever fan goes with your house.
That's very similar to what I just bought (and had in my last house). I like that globe much better than 4-5 individual lights that shine in your eyes.
