Random question re: SS#

I lurk here, but have a questions.

We got DD's SS card back and her number starts with 10*. Isn't that weird? I am intrigued by this.

DH and myself both have 51* numbers.

Totally random, but I wondered if they are starting over. It use to be the first numbers represented where you were born (that is what I had been told a long time ago)

I'm a lurker as well... but we just received our son's ss card (he is 4 weeks today!) and his number starts with 78*.

I thought the numbers were based on location but I could be totally wrong.

I thought the first few digits were based on location, but DS2's SS# is completely different from DS1's...and they were born in the same place. I have no idea how they determine them...

They are based on location. Each state has a number of difference prefixes it can start with. You can google the list if you want.

I can tell it took a while for my parents to apply for my SS card. I was born in TX but have a west coast # to start mine.

Since so many people said the first digits are based on location I thought I would look it up... it's kind of interesting how your social is figured...

SS has started randomly assigning numbers. They won't represent location and such as they used to.
