Interesting behavior with toy--any guesses

My 2 year old Australian Shepherd typically rips open stuffed animals and eats the stuffing and squeaker...so we pretty much don't let him have these toys.

But as I was getting out Christmas decorations, I find a stuffed penguin with a squeaker...not sure where I got it or if it's a dog toy or a cheap human toy.

Anyways, he takes it and has been hiding it around the house. Sometimes, I will hear him crying from the next room, I go in, and he has this toy in his mouth. He's never "played" this way before and I am really curious

Sometimes they just form an attachment to a toy.

My dog is like yours--immediately rips open any stuffed toy and pulls out all the stuffing. Except for the green dinosaur we bought her, which she carries around all day. I don't understand it.
