Squirmy's eczema went away with daily use of the Aveeno eczema cream, was gone for about 2 weeks. Then it came back worse than ever and is creeping up onto her scalp and her face Little red bumps all over her torso and neck. Is over the counter stuff strong enough or should we be calling the pedi for a steroid cream?
Keep her well lubed. If you can find Argon oil that stuff is amazing. It literally turned bleeding eczema smooth in less than a week.
I'm not a fan of a lot of the prescription ointments. They have some pretty scary warning labels on them. Mostly don't bath too often, keep well moisturized and make sure the air in your house isn't too dry. Also if you are noticing outbreaks look for food triggers and benadryl can help.
Oldest child has eczema that we have battled since about 11 weeks old. We have paid probably over 1k in fancy prescription creams, oils, lotions, bath oils, etc - you name it, we've tried it. After 3 years of experimenting, we discovered a few things (take what you want)
1) Do not bath every day - bath every 2-3 days or less when eczema is really bad
2) Liberally use aquaphor all over the body and then put OTC hydrocortisone cream on red/inflamed spots, then put PJ's on so sticky baby does not ruin rug/furniture/mommy's clothes
3) Cetaphil has a new moisturizer out that is AMAZING that you have to put on right after the bath while the baby is still very wet --- Cetaphil Restoraderm (not every store carries it). This has significantly improved our child's skin and she no longer needs aquaphor or hydro cream very much.
4) Bio Resonance testing --- very common in Switzerland -- based on the laws of physics. An allergy type of testing. We learned what makes her skin inflamed --- citrus fruits/foods with high acidity. Girls already have a lot of acid in their bodies naturally and eating this stuff makes it worse -- if you are BF your baby, watch what you are eating -- eliminate tomato sauce and other acidic foods and see if you see a difference. Also, my bio resonance dr said every child with eczema is lacking in important minerals - calcium, phosphate, etc and so now we do a gram of mineral powder every day in her milk/juice cup.
5) Humidifier in room -- make sure there is lots of moisture in her room in these dry winter months.
I found my hydrocortisone cream and put a little bit on and some aquaphor. It looks so painful She's more focused on her tooth coming in though at least. I trimmed her nails really short so she can't scratch.
just found a sample of the cetaphil restoraderm in my bedroom. My derm gave it to me last winter for pregnancy induced eczema and I never used it since the steroid cream cleared it up. It's a little kit with body wash and the moisturizer, will try it out!
We mix cortisone cream with regular Eucerin and apply it after baths, and we only bathe he every other day unless she really needs it. We have been doing this since she was 5 months old and it has worked really well.
