My grandmother died when I was 16. Her name was Sally. Since she passed, we see my grandfather maybe once or twice a year. He's pretty horrible to my dad and clearly favors my aunt and her kids, who we don't even see once a year.
Anyway, I just saw my aunt on Instagram and she posted a pic of my grandfather with a dog, saying he got his first dog at 74 yo. Her name? Sally.
Ew. Why would you name a dog after your dead wife? I don't like it.
I don't think it's companionship, he's had several serious girlfriends, and I guess he's still with the gf he's had for a few years.. My grandparents didn't have a great marriage.

Oh I see. I thought it would be a in memory of thing. But as for their marriage, my grandparents didn't have a good one but now after all those years of my grandpa passing my grandma only remembers the good sides and acts like it was a fairy tale.
The only squicky thing about it is that it's a human name. I guess that's not really squicky, but I just think it's strange to have pets with human names. My BFF's dog is named Brian. BRIAN.
My grandparents had a dog naimed Daisy. They loved her, she died, they were so upset. They got another puppy, same breed (different color though) and named it Daisy.
It was weird. Especially since the new Daisy would do something and my grandparents would be "the first Daisy NEVER did that!" like it was the name that made the first one a good dog?? I think my point is old people do weird things and I try not to read much into it.

Old people do weird shit. I've told you about my neighbors who call their new dog the same thing as their dog that died (because they are idiots and it got hit by a bus).
He may think his marriage was great - putting a rosy spin on it that can only be done with the interference of many years and the failing of memory.
It's kind of weird but I wouldn't really get too worked up about it.
Naming dogs after people is a thing in my extended family, and its always meant to be enormously disrespectful and a big insult. I would be pretty squicked out hearing someone named their dog after a dead spouse.
