I can't take credit for this - it's a cross between an idea from the instructor and another mom in my Parent Ed group.
Anyways, I'm getting pictures of important family members (aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc) and laminating them so they become flashcards of sorts. It's a way that kids can learn the faces of family members, especially if those people aren't local and they don't get to see them often. Other moms have done this as a photo block and they've said that it's really helped their little ones to recognize people when they come for a visit. Fairly inexpensive and something personal for the child. Just thought I would throw it out there.

We did this with DS1 with those cheapie plastic 20-photo books you can get at Walmart. It did help him learn everyone's name and he still looks through it sometimes because I tried to use pics of him (at the time) with people. Now that he's "grown up" he likes to look at pics from when he was a baby.

I did this for DS and even glued magnets on the back. He loved them, and they definitely helped him learn names and faces.
I have to say, though, that I would do it without the magnets next time, as some of them fell off and I eventually took them all off.
Very cute idea! Along a similar vein, my mom got DS this "Family Garden" photobook/toy by Manhattan Toys when he was 6mo. She put pictures of all our family in it, including DH's family who live out of state. He LOVES it. Flips through the "pages" looks at the pictures, chews on the flaps. It keeps him occupied for at least 15 minutes. It's my go-to toy if I have to put him in his crib to get something done, like shower or vacuum.
