DS is 3.5 weeks old and BFed. He hasn't pooped yesterday or today yet. I'm pretty sure the last time he pooped was either Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.
He has been a little fussy on and off the past couple of days. I just gave him some gas drops about 30-45 minutes ago since he seemed to have an upset stomach.
When should I worry about him not pooping? What can I do to possibly help him poop? I've never dealt with a non-pooper before! DDs were always very good in that department, lol.
DD is an infrequent pooper - she has gone up to a week without pooping. We massage her belly, bicycle her legs, put a warm wet washcloth on her belly in the bath.
Our pedi said we could put 1/2 ounce of prune juice in a bottle of BM or try rectal stimulation with a thermometer if her belly is hard, distended and she seems like she's in pain...we haven't had to go that route and would like to avoid it!
I also have microwaveable breast pads (EMAB Booby Tubes) that I will nuke for 20 seconds and place on her belly with some pressure.
Otherwise, just make sure the gussets in his diapers are not tucked in and brace yourself when it comes...because it will be epic.
DD started spacing her poops out somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks. I would bicycle his legs, try a rectal thermometer, and watch & wait... call the ped for more advice if he seems uncomfortable.
We've done the rectal thermometer in the past (correction: DH has done it... I won't). This week DS has had constipation issues and we've been doing the bicycle legs. Our ped also recommended dark Karo syrup but we haven't tried that yet.
The only time I've ever called the pedi was when he went on a 9 day poop streak. They said I could give him an ounce of plain Pedialyte to help get things moving. He pooped on day 11.
But yeah, this is C's norm--he poops once every 3-5 days. I don't think he's pooped since Sunday, actually.
DS who is EBF went through a similar 4 day stretch with no poops at that age. I called the pedi, who said not to worry until he hit 7 days (!!!!) or was uncomfortable. Pedi said to bicycle his legs and do the rectal thermometer (which we didn't). DS pooped on day 5. At 9mo, he poops every other day.
LO went on a ~10 day poop strike when she was about a month old. I think we were on the verge of doing something then (after looking it up/calling the doctor), but then she went.
